First, does IM really work for connecting to people? Second, is it better to email someone first and intro, or to take a chance without doing this and IM? Is there a better time to IM? Third, why do people just let the other person sit there, without accepting or declining?

It the im screen pops up when you are changing screens or reloading, it might get burried and you don't see it. That is what usually happens when I get an IM. I don't even see them until I'm closing out.

I would definately prefer an email before an IM. I don't like IMing w/ someone I know nothing about...had a bad experience with this.
Sometimes, if it's sitting there without accepting or declining, it may be that the person is away from the computer even if it shows they are online. Good luck, lovingmom! You'll have fun. |

Personally, I don't do IM. Just as a flickering light can cause some migraines, it can cause me a panic attack. The IM pop-up is too similar.
However, I'd still want the email contact for a while before I'd try IM - just more courteous and less desperate in appearance. |

I prefer talking to the other person through emails first, than it is okay to except IM. JMO

Oops! Ok, I hear you. Thanks for the replies and the feedback. Any other ideas on how to show interest without desperation?

As far as Im's go if the person isn't responding to your Im it may be just there way of saying there not interested.

I will generally only accept IMs from people I have either exchanged e-mails with, or interacted with in the forums. I still have this residual spammer flashback issue from accepting "blind" IMs elsewhere.
