From a geek/nerd standpoint, this webserver is dedicated. I built it myself and I run it myself out of my own home and I just pay for the internet bandwidth.

It runs on a Unix OS with Apache, PHP, MySQL, and BIND. All opensource.

Something you too, can do yourself.

Being a Web Design and Interactive Media major, the first thing I notice on the site is the Comic Sans. That's a BIG no. Comic Sans is the WORST font to use for a body text. You want to use a good serif font such as Verdana, Arial, or Helvetica. Decorative fonts are no good for body text.

The links on the left should be consistent in the rollovers, pertaining to color.

For the advertising, I recommend AdSense, or something of the sort, and make sure you use SEO. If the search engine doesn't know about your site, neither will the world.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It's basically optimizing your website for all the search engines. Search engines work with little robots called "spiders". They crawl around the net and look at tags in your code called, "meta tags". In these meta tags you'll have keywords, and from there, the spider looks for those keywords in your code. However, your site can get banned from search engines if you are found to be cheating and using the words out of context, or one after the other. You can find tutorials on SEO all over the net, just run a google search on it.

Hello Lucy,
My name is Rick, I am in Denver, and I run my own Internet company. We have a variety of HOSTING, design, development, and maintenance options, and we've launched over 300 custom websites in the past 10 years of business! I certainly have some feedback for your site if you'd like to hear it. Also, I am sure we can give you a great price for hosting (and maintenance). Our clients are across the US, plus sites for clients in Great Britain, Turkey, and Japan.

You can contact me directly at arbisinc at AOL dotcom, or visit our website and view some of our active clients' sites at www.ARBISinc.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Rick

Hey everyone, just wanted to know how many have their own websites and how you are doing with them? I started one almost 2 years ago but though it ranks well in some search engines it just isn't making enough to cover the costs of hosting it. Can someone give me some advice? www.exploring-the-amalfi-coast.com
I appreciate it. Post your site here too so we can all gain experience and learn more.

adsense/adwords/affiliates - any advice?

Thanks everyone! flowerforyou

I have 10 sites of my own. They would do well if I would do my part in promoting them and all.

Spiders haven't done any more than glance at meta tags for almost 8 years.

There are many thing to covers with regards to SEO.

Word density
Markup
Title tags
Semantic site structure
Sitemaps
Reciprocal links

The list goes on and on and on and on.....

There is no SEO golden bullet.

Try these two links for some more info (found via Google, dunno if they're good or not):

I work on websites quite frequently for my work...somehow making my own seems...bleh. I don't really have anything I'm motivated enough to say to put up my own site.

Well, it'd be easy enough to put a site together, but maintaining a site is a lot of work. Hell, even generating a site with interesting content is a ton of work, much less attracting ad-worthy amounts of traffic.
