Thanks. Fantastic book. I actually got to see Rob speak live in San Antonio a couple of months ago. What an experience! |

I also apologize for any critical comments I may have made earlier on this post Right on, I personally forgive you. You're slightly off on no other prominent figure of a religion dying and comming back to life though. Gnostics, one of a few examples I know about, believe that one of the gods who lived in paradise came down to earth- which is a mockery of paradise- to show people how to live. Later there were Christian Gnostics which is why I mentioned this one in particular, the Gnostic Gospels are kind of interesting to read when you've got nothin to do. Oh, and btw, nice post Mars, I'll have to pick up that book. |

I fully intend to read Velvet Elvis. "Repainting the Christian Faith" is what caught my eye. I don't follow your God, but as Damned as I am, I can't help reading about the Old Man. The passion invoked when he comes into any conversation makes me grin from the sidelines. People who hold their faith through the bad times are to be respected and not trod upon.
But I am working my way through The Orgin Of Satan by Elaine H. Pagels. I just got it today and I am sure you understand that it's a bit higher on my reading list. |

First off, I commend all the regular posters. I've never seen anything like this: relative calm, educated conversation with scary words like satanism, witch, Asatru, and Christian so close together! I've actually learned and re-learned a lot by reading all your posts. Personally, since I think this room has gone beyond the literal definition of religion, I'm kind of a Pantheistic Christian... The best metaphor I have for my beliefs came from a Taoist though I've changed it alittle. Think of the truth as a pool of sourts or a lake. You cannot really transfer it from where it is to another person, you need a vessel (which I think of as words though religion or science work just as well). People tend to look at the vessel and think of it as the truth itself("bible- thumpers *cough*) and of corse once truth is taken from it's larger source it picks up dirt from said vessel or parts of the vessel soluvate(lol sorry no other word came to mind) and mix in with the truth. I know... I'm still working on my beliefs... Figuring a little out every day =) though you guys have helped a lot, thanks! Thanks a bunch. |

This thread was quite contentious for a few pages... the typical "us" vs. "them" caused some knee jerk unkind reactions to come...
But then it seems a spirit of open-ness and tolerance prevailed. And now it's still an interesting discussion... just peaceful. How restful and refreshing. Peace and joy all. And Thank You to the originator, Big Jim. The OP writer owns their thread and sets the tone. Nice tone. |

The OP writer owns their thread and sets the tone. Nice tone. Thanks. I do what I can. Not to brag, but handling people is what I do for a living. I work Security at a casino and part time as a bouncer for a local club. I get to meet all sorts of nasty... *ahem* ...different types of people. I dread the Elko Motorcycle Jamboree... Those guys hit really hard and don't go down easy. Mostly the posters did all the handling for themselves, for that they need to be applauded. I've met a lot of nice people through here, you are very near the top of the list, Anoasis. I'll check back on this thread in a bit. |

I'm a christian... if you're not then you're headed for hades You really embrace your own beliefs... "judge not lest ye be judged" and all. The average christian's Holier Than Thou attitude is a huge reason I stopped following your god. i'm sorry that people like that have made you leave God |
