That's a loaded question. From my experience it all depends on who it is and what the situation is.

It depends, that is for sure. It also depends on who you are (assuming you are the person giving or not giving respect to say John Smith.)
It depends on your mentality, your culture and many other factors. I see respect as a default, and it is up to you to show me that you continue to be worthy of it, regardless of your age. In Filipino culture, i dated a Filipina, you are taught that you respect your elders, even if they are your elders by 1 minute. This led to issues with a bratty older sister and her younger sister, my girlfriend at the time, who grew up here in the USA and was more westernized. The older sister was not worthy of absolute respect in my opinion, as i don't have nice words for her, but she was also not deserving of disrespect. I was just neutral to her for that reason. I hope that helps. |

for me Respect Is Reciprocal.
Tho Marlon Brando in The Godfather usually gets the credit for this quote, in truth he was actually borrowing a bit of wisdom from the Pakistani Beggar King Hussein Nishah (1538–1599), who wrote, “Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given.” |

Respect should be given to all first. If another human is disrespectful orabusive to the point respect is lost then respect must be earned back

respect is two way but very important when it comes to the elders. In my culture respecting an elder is mandatory even when things are not right there is a way to express it when and if the elder is wrong. one is not allowed to shout at an elder and I find it also biblical.

RESPECT IS IT EARNED OR GIVEN? Both There is the respect we give to everyone as the rights all people have in society. There is the respect we have for achievement, a Gold Medal winner in the Olympics, which they have earned. I believe respect takes many forms both given and earned. |
