Topic: How & where to meet someone? And believing in it. | |
---|---|
So many singles here, many of whom are looking for love, but don't know how, where, and in the end many of us kind of lose faith that it can happen.
So I thought, why not share some inspiration and tell about the wonderful, funny, exciting, etc. way you met a partner. And since the idea is to be an inspiration for others, leave out the sour bits. That's for another topic. So... What story could you share about how you've met someone? My story.... I came back to The Netherlands after 2 years abroad, and I felt horribly out of place here. I'd seen so much, lived among the Aboriginals in AUstralia, lived and travelled through Indonesia. In those days (1987) very few people travelled far, nor had any the experiences I'd had. After being single for about a year, my Tae Kwondo teacher got sick and had to stop. We got a new teacher, and one of the men who came with him to help out liked me. A lot. I didn't like him all that much, lol, but after class I did end up talking to him. And it turned out he'd lived in Australia as a kid for years on end, and again when he was about 17-18!!! Wowza! The next time I saw him he had a present for me. I couldn't wait till after class to see it! It was a kangaroo skull. Talk about an unusual first pressie! Of course I still got :) And yep... we got together, married, kids, own house, the lot :) So we met in the sport school. |

I used to vend at street fairs and car shows on weekends. I was at a car show and what I thought was a Chinese couple set up next to me. Turns out they were cousins. She'd just emigrated to NY three months earlier and her cousin was helping her out. We talked all weekend despite a severe communication barrier. The show was a bust, but...
We wound up being together for almost eight years. |

I'm actually really bad at picking up on or sending signals of interest in person. I've caught myself a few times, afterward, recognizing that men were flirting or showing interest by talking to me, but I wasn't aware at the time that it was anything but casual conversation. I have done much better online where I know that contact is showing interest. Most are a waste of time. I've met with a few who were worthwhile. And one that I feel lucky to have found.

Many people are bad at it. I'm inclined to think it is typically one of two reasons. Shyness or not being in the moment and open to possibilities. Sometimes it is both. Striking up conversations and making connections in the real world can be daunting for many. And nowadays people get lost in their phones and their own heads. |

Most people aren't totally comfortable around talking to a potential new partner. The idea, however, was not to talk about that but to inspire others with the beautiful story of how you did meet your partner(s) at the time. Uplifting stories by which we give each other inspiration and hope that it is possible to meet someone. |

I met my first long term girlfriend through a matchmaker service in the 1980's, where guys paid and girls didn't. The matchmakers were not good at all, and quite expensive, but eventually accidentally they got it right, mostly.
I met another (my best) partner through an add I placed in the personals in the local paper. Turned out we already knew each other - she was the ex girlfriend of a mate I worked with 10 years earlier. I lost contact when they went bush. Back then one day I was in the back of their car and we were all cruising on a saturday arvo, drinking and talking, probably going to the beach, and I thought to myself:'I want a girlfriend like her, but less crazy'. She had energy and passion and was bursting with life. Well mysterious ways, years later - we were together 8 years. I miss her. It seemed we were meant to be together; so many odd things happened for us to reconnect. I've heard of many couples meeting at weddings and receptions. |

I only know, where not to meet a partner: In work. My late granny always said 'In work, there is only colleagues, but never friends'. Should have listened to her

one that i met and dated from another site comes to mind.
i don't remember just what is was in her profile that kicked it off, but all of our messages wound up in olde english and referenced knights in tin foil armour with toothpick lances and fair maidens who really didn't need saving from dragons. after we met face to face both admitted that some of the messages took large amounts of time to craft and still carry real get to know you stuff. we met soon after and clicked pretty well. we dated for quite a while' shared shared many common interests but in the end we both accepted that it wasn't meant to be happily ever after and parted as friends |

It sounds like a real good connection! I've had one like that too, one that stands out more than the other 2. Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed reading it. |

I love it. Glad it was a good experience for you! |

I use to take all circumstances into account. Including unexpected situations ... which might be an interesting setup indeed |

Anywhere and everywhere, you never know. Just talk and be friendly. In 2020 just doing that and showing that you can interact politely with others goes a long way.

Went to a New Year's Eve party being held in an obscure warehouse in the late 80s. Immediately locked eyes with the drummer. Blatantly stared at him while I danced. Subtle eh? *laughing*
During a break, he sauntered over to me. We talked for a while. He finished his set. We were together for the summer before he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a music producer. Hes now in New York City, has traveled Europe with his band and still a music producer. |

That sounds really sexy! Okay, I'm biased, I tend to have a thing for drummers myself, lol. Really nice, and sounds danged adventurous! Thank you for sharing. |

Including unexpected situations ... which might be an interesting setup indeed True, but I was looking for positive 'how we met' stories to inspire each other and give a feeling that anything is possible when it comes to finding love. Just because many lose hope after X amount of time. And most what is talked about is negative stuff. Why not add some positive stories to that to tip the scales a bit and spread some hope & inspiration?! |
