Italian court changes baby's name

As far as unusual baby names go, "Friday" is not too bad. It is short, means something, and is easy to spell. All in all, I kind of like it. Unfortunately for this couple, the Italian courts do not and have ruled that they cannot name their son "Friday."

Little Friday was already five months old when his name was noticed by a city clerk. The clerk brought the matter to the attention of a tribunal, which decided the name fell into the category of "ridiculous or shameful." Claiming the name would hinder the boy from developing "serene interpersonal relationships", the tribunal moved to protect this child from a lifetime of days-of-the-week jokes.

"We named him Friday because we like the sound of the name. Even if it would have been a girl, we would have named her Friday," the boy's mother, Mara Germano says. Livid, the parents appealed the decision. The appeals court ruled against them, saying the name recalled the servile savage in the novel Robinson Crusoe and pointing out that some superstitious Italians consider Friday to be an unlucky day.

The court ordered his name be changed, but the parents refused. So, the court did it for them, renaming the child Gregory, after the saint whose feast day he was born on.

"My son was born Friday, baptised Friday, will call himself Friday, we will call him Friday but when he gets older he will have to sign his name Gregory," she said. Take that, Italian courts!

Well, I do think you should be able to name your kid whatever you choose, but you also have a responsibility to make sure it's not a name that'll get their azz kicked on the playground someday laugh laugh laugh

Obviously, in Italy that name would not stand.

I am glad I live in North America an have FREEDOM to name my child as I wish , but when naming a child parents should consider how life with the chosen name would be ...

heres a few names I JOKED about naming my last child while I was pregnant , and would jokingly say that they would get a lot of respect if their name was: Chef or Doctor , or
Mr Prime minester / Mr President ....laugh

A couple has got over the disappointment of having their choice of 4Real as the name for their baby son turned down by calling him Superman instead.
# Have your say: What is the worst Christian name you have come across?

Pat and Sheena Wheaton were told by the government registry in New Zealand they could not register the name because it included a digit.

Mr Wheaton said he came up with the unlikely moniker after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realising their baby was "for real".

However, the family has refused to let the law or good taste get in the way of their choice, insisting they will continue to refer to their two-month-old son as 4Real.

In the meantime they plan to officially name him Superman.

"No matter what, its going to stay 4Real," Mr Wheaton told the New Zealand Herald newspaper, "I'm certainly not a quitter".

He said criticism of the couple posted on the internet regarding their choice of name had been difficult to handle.

"I did go online and Google some of the stories and as tough as I am, it does get to you, but there's no point getting upset," he said.

"It could be a 10-year-old school girl making those comments."

A spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs, which operates the registry, told the newspaper discussions with the Wheatons about their son's name were continuing.
