or just fear mongering from a different side?

Michael Cohen says the president will not go quietly if he is beaten in 2020. We should believe him.

The United States is now headed by someone pathologically incapable of admitting defeat. This doesn’t bode well for the 2020 presidential election.

Among the most chilling words uttered this week by Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, were “given my experience working for Mr Trump I fear that if he loses the election in 2020 that there will never be a peaceful transition of power, and this is why I agreed to appear before you today”.

Cohen should know better than anyone, but we already had reason to worry. In 2016, when polls showed Hillary Clinton with a wide lead, Trump claimed the election was rigged against him.

He refused to commit to honoring the election results if he lost, warning that he’d “reserve my right to contest or file a legal challenge in the case of a questionable result.” He added that he’d accept the results of the election “if I win”.

For Trump, losing is the deepest form of humiliation, and humiliation is intolerable
Throughout the summer of 2016, Trump’s claim of election rigging was echoed on Fox News. Newt Gingrich spoke of “a long tradition on the part of Democratic machines of trying to steal elections”. Rudolph Giuliani declared “Hillary and [Tim] Kaine are right in the middle of the Washington insider rigged system”.

Trump’s campaign manager at the time, Paul Manafort, said federal officials couldn’t be trusted to prevent voter fraud, warning that “if you’re relying on the justice department to ensure the security of the elections, we have to be worried”.

For Trump, losing is the deepest form of humiliation, and humiliation is intolerable.

By early August 2016, according to a Bloomberg poll, 56% of Trump supporters believed the election would be rigged. (Among all voters, only 34% predicted a rigged election; 60% rejected the idea.)

Even after the election, Trump refused to accept that he had lost the popular vote. Still claiming election fraud, he established a presidential commission to find it. When the commission came back empty-handed, he abruptly dissolved it, saying – wrongly – that it had uncovered “substantial evidence of voter fraud”. No such evidence emerged.

For Trump, losing is the deepest form of humiliation, and humiliation is intolerable.

Every time he has lost a legislative or legal battle during his presidency he has blamed the other side, and has lashed back: shuttering the government, declaring a national emergency, whipping up his followers against recalcitrant judges, Democrats, the media or whomever he holds responsible.

Imagine it’s November 2020 and Trump has lost the election. He charges voter fraud, claiming that the “deep state” organized tens of millions of illegal immigrants to vote against him, and says he has an obligation not to step down.

Only this time he’s already president, with all the powers a president commands.

In years past, Americans have trusted our system of government enough that we abide by its outcomes even though we may disagree with them. Only once in our history – in 1861 – did enough of us distrust the system so much we succumbed to civil war.

Typically, when an election is over, the peaceful transition of power reminds the public that our allegiance is not toward a particular person but to our system of government.

Five weeks after the bitterly contested election of 2000, and just one day after the supreme court ruled 5-4 in favor of George W Bush, Al Gore graciously declared: “I say to president-elect Bush that what remains of partisan rancor must now be put aside, and may God bless his stewardship of this country.”

But what happens if an incumbent president claims our system is no longer trustworthy?

We should take seriously Michael Cohen’s admonition that if Trump is defeated in 2020, he will not leave office peacefully.

Republican leaders as well as supreme court justices and civic and religious leaders across the land must be prepared to assert the primacy of our system of government over the will of the man who refuses to lose.

We shouldn't believe a convicted liar either.
There's a group of very wealthy people who are using finances and the media to keep the American people divided in order to create a civil war as they have in many countries globally. Perhaps we should prepare for a civil war as it seems the 'sheep' have no problem being led to slaughter....
"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players...."
Look beyond the left/right and look straight ahead instead..

Maybe, but what about when we also have a liar leading and encouraging division and enemy centered thinking? If said person is good enough at manipulation (think Jim Jones), how dangerous might it turn if he decides he should not step down after losing(of course, if he doesnt lose or passes from old age, it becomes irrelevant until 2024).

Don't be fooled. They all work for the same entity. Trump is just playing his part, just as obama, bush, clinton,etc... have in the past. Eisenhower and Kennedy tried to warn the people, but the people chose to ignore the signs. Well, the time has come and all the representatives in DC are playing their part.
I was once one of them, that's how i know. I resigned my post in 2008 after the banker bailout. Your representatives made a fortune from that scam at the cost of the taxpayers.
Trump and the clintons are very close friends as so are the bush's and clinton's, and so on....
It's all scripted, and the evidence is out there just waiting for the people to find it. Problem is, most people get their 'opinion' from mainstream news. It's easier, and the people like easy.
The powers that be know we will not fight against them if our bellies are full. They are apparently right.
If trump loses and doesn't want to leave quietly, then that was part of the script...
It seems people are incapable of independent and/or critical thinking.
We are witnessing the end of America as we know it and as Eisenhower and Kennedy warned.
The people have become very gullible.

Cohen is a proven liar. The left wants people to believe Trump lies because Hillary lost. Hillary is also a proven liar, as is her husband, BILL. They lied their way out of the whitewater obscenity....and are still pulling in milllions for speaking tours. Dems attend those speeches. I do not understand why.

I dont care what left or right wants. I use my brain. I believe Trump lies, because HE DOES. lol.

He admits to saying things he doesn't believe in or know are true. He has been caught in so many lies, he is nearly a carricature this point.

Just remember one thing! The only ones found to have colluded during this Presidency and in the elections, have been the democrats!!! Just like they rigged their own primary election against Sanders!!! I am a Democrat that will honestly say, the liberal snowflake left democrats will destroy this great country and will do anything to get their way!! Look at all the fake hate they made up! They blame a hat for hatred! That says it all!!

I am also a democrat. There have been plenty of republican indictments in the collusion investigation. I dont know of any proof of collusion by democrats or rigging of elections. If democrats were so good at rigging election, why would Hilary not be president now? that doesnt seem to be consistent. I will agree that BOTH the extremists on the left who are sensitive to the extreme, and the extremists on the right who are hateful or ignorant to the extreme, will collide in ways that destroy this country and BOTH EXTREMES will do anything to get their way. Hate is not fake or made up. It is real. The only issue is how widespread it is or whether its still minimal enough to manage.

And I dont think people blame that hat for hatred. anymore than they blamed sheets for racism. I believe people are associating the symbolism attached to wearing these things, with the actions and beliefs of those who wear them.

let's hope you are right, seriously. I believe he hates losing. I'm hoping he misses power that has less checks and balances even more.

We the People have become afraid of symbols, words and history. ...by design.
Home of the brave...?
Say goodbye to America. I think it's too far gone to recover without another revolution and/or civil war.
If we can't unite against the true perpetrators, we are destined to fall.
The people are stuck blaming the puppets and not the puppet masters, and that's because they were indoctrinated to believe the 'puppet masters' are nothing more than a 'conspiracy theory'.
It's going to get worse before it gets any better unless We the People start looking in the right direction. Follow the money....

It was only the primary they rigged so it would be Hilary vs. Trump and she still loss!!! All the things the people have been arrested for in Trumps party have been past things, that had nothing to do with Trump, except the Stormy Daniels BS. Cohen is a proven liar, just like all lawyers!! So I guess you say all the news stories of people being attacked over the hat is false?, jussie smollett, perfect example of made up hate!
Even fellow Democrats admitted the primary was rigged!!! Oooo and notice my source is the BBC not an American owned media outlet! https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41850798
Also even CNN reported it
https://www.cnn.com/2017/11/02/politics/elizabeth-warren-dnc-rigged/index.html

Again Trump is not a saint, but still better choice over Hilary.. Both side spread hate for eachother! Both sides only work for the rich!! Both sides and the media is the problem! Until the people take back control of this great nation! We the people will continue to be slaves for the rich politicians and their lobbyist friends!! Truth :)
Everybody enjoy their Sunday! Hope it's beautiful where you are!!

elections are decided by voters. Everybody claims 'rigging' when it doesnt go their way. But no one puts a gun to any voters head. They must do the research and be informed. The rigging I refer to is the ILLEGAL kind that intentionally puts out false information or physically tampers with ballots. I agree to disagree about Trump.

Hilary was better educated, more knowledgable and experienced in the roles and responsibilities of the office, and more in touch with how different people live and what different people go through, as well as more professional and less gullible in her demeanor and ability to negotiate and deal with global leaders, as well as experienced in working hard to get ahead instead of being handed things on silver platters. And though she may or may not have lied, she has never to my knowledge reveled in her ability to lie for popularity sake or power and has not undermined entire structural industries like MEDIA and the INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY or MILITARY COMMUNITY.

and hate is still real, despite outlier hoaxes like Smollets MAGA attack or Trumps claim of muslims in New York celebrating 9/11.

IT is no better to be slave for a rich businessman, than for a rich politician. Ethical and unethical people exist in all walks of life, as do competent and incompetent.

So, I can agree to disagree on many of these points. Likewise, hoping everyone is having a beautiful day drinker

The main reason I'm not worried about Trump refusing to leave quietly if he loses in 2020, is because one of the many powers he DOESN'T have, is the power to stay in office, physically or otherwise, after losing.

One of the things he's already had to learn the hard way, is that being President does NOT empower a person to order illegal acts to be committed.

And there is no legal way he can prevent the election from being held, either, in case anyone is worried about that.

That talk went around once before in 2016, when obama was on his way out. It's just changed sides, and now it's Trump that won't leave.

I'd be more worried about a socialist getting elected. Or not getting elected, because the socialist viewpoint could very well sink the dem party. Then again, The GOP was supposed to go sailing down the hole in 2016, and they didn't.

Its pure scuttlebutt, on both sides.

http://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-loses-know-expect-anger-060002882.html

You mean fear mongering from Yahoo news?
Not really a "different side."
Yahoo news isn't really news and I'm not sure there could be any more obvious of bias.
Yahoo is mostly click bait for people looking to emotionally masturbate in a liberal/dem/leftist echo chamber.

Is the article a copied opinion from the comments section of actual news? Or at least connected within 6 degrees of separation to actual news?

scary thought? is it really probable?

What's that?
This?:
We should take seriously Michael Cohen’s admonition that if Trump is defeated in 2020, he will not leave office peacefully.

Exactly and specifically what does this mean?
He threatens to use nukes? He barricades himself into the oval office? He demands a recount? He changes the locks to the white house and keeps all the keys himself, subsisting off all the saltine crackers he took from air force one, issues presidential declarations through twitter and just assumes people are doing what he says?

Republican leaders as well as supreme court justices and civic and religious leaders across the land must be prepared to assert the primacy of our system of government over the will of the man who refuses to lose

Is there any indication that they aren't?
Have there been a lot of instances where what trump has done everyone in congress, all of the courts, and every "civic and religious leader across the land" just said "hmmm, we're just going to accept that even though we don't agree with it and Trump doesn't legally have the power to do that."

Jesus.
"Yahoo news."
At least mad magazine and the onion are humorous.
