Who says they aren't reading it?
People see stop signs and red stop lights but still go through them.
People know drinking (or texting) and driving is bad, but they still do it.

You've started a profile on a dating site.

That's little different than standing on a highway with a big sign that says "I'm single and lonely and want attention!"

Doesn't matter what red lights or stop signs or laws you think you put in place to control traffic.

Sometimes the people you don't want to stop, will.

A lot of posters point out this is kind of a numbers game.
Like "hi is the best message to get a first date!"
IOW sending just hi to 100k people for a 1% response rate and a subsequent 1% date rate is better than sending out 10 thought out emails for a 1% response rate and 1% date rate.

Lots of guys are probably reading your age restrictions and not contacting you.
Most probably won't send you an email, contacting you, to tell you that they aren't contacting you, and are going to follow your restrictions against them contacting you.


In a similar vein, it's kinda funny, ironic even.
Any restrictions you have on your profile, the more you are going to "put off" or dissuade even those you might be compatible with and would otherwise contact you.

Let's say you go to a bar. If you sit there normally, or even open and friendly, it's going to attract creeps, but also "good" guys.
But if you sit there all pissed off with a "don't mess with me" RBF, or t-shirt reading "f-off losers!" focused on making sure those "creeps" stay away, you're still communicating "f off!" and some of the "good" ones are going to respond to that even though you might not have "intended" to communicate it towards the "good" ones.

Here's the thing about life and politics and capitalism and marketing and everything but maybe your mother.
You are only as good as the next available alternative.
And online? You are a stranger equal among strangers. You are only as desirable as your marketing compared to the millions of other alternatives on the profile shelf.
