Topic: Types of Privilege

for those who will assume that 'privilege' only refers to one's race

FIRST, the definition of Privilege: : a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor

SECOND, what it means to be Favored: providing preferential treatment

https://www.freshu.io/saman-aamer/here-are-8-types-of-privilege-you-might-have

1. Race and ethnicity
- Racial issues are a huge problem today in the United States. According to US News, about 60% of non-black people believe that black people are less intelligent than white people. It is also more likely for a convicted white man to be hired over a black man with no criminal record.

2. Sexual orientation
- Identifying as straight is considered the norm in our society. Anyone that isn't straight usually has to "come out," which can be a terrifying experience. Many of those in the LGBTQ+ community hide their sexualities for protection from "social shame.

3. Gender and Gender Identity
4. Financial situation

5. Disability
- Besides already making life difficult for someone, disabilities also come with stigma. For example, people with mental illnesses are often labelled as "crazy" and people try to avoid them. This prevents people from getting help for their disabilities.

6. Religion
- Certain religions are targeted more than others. The largest religions attacked in hate crimes are Judaism, Islam and ethnic religions. Recently, Islam has been heavily attacked due to terrorist groups such as ISIS who claim that they are representatives of the religion. However, we must remember that every religion has extremists, and those cannot represent the majority of the faith practicers.

7. Citizenship
- Non-citizens can attend American universities, but have limits on where they can work and how long they can stay, despite being financially essential to universities.

8. Educational level
-81% of high school students graduate. If you are enrolled in university, you are already privileged, even if you worked for this privilege. Many people can not attend school for financial or personal reasons.

About 60% of college students graduate. Dropouts face higher rates of unemployment. Degrees are not as common as we think.

Have no idea what your point is.
It is up to the individual who is granted free thinking abd mobility, to go out and find out who they are as a person.
Many wasted basket weaving degrees out there.
Be useful. Your education whatever it may be. Could be inadequate for your needs. Wholly adequate or just beyond . You may have learned all you OJT.

No matter. You have one privledged life. Use it. Waste it. Whats your legacy.
The world is the diverse place democrats hail all should be when we have all types of people. Rich poor helpful helpless...on and on.
There is no one pants size fits all solution.

yes, GLOBALLY, living in certain countries is a privilege too.

but WITHIN this country, there are other privileges people pretend dont matter or exist.

I think all 8 you listed does matter! I don't necessarily see them all as maybe Society sees them . I am an individual with my own set of values !

It is easy to oversimplify and overgeneralize.

I will correct that last sentence to read:

WITHIN this country, there are other privileges far too many people pretend don't matter or exist ...

According to US News, about 60% of non-black people believe that black people are less intelligent than white people

...Doesn't that mean that a lot of asians, hispanics, middle easterners, indians, native americans, eskimo's (are they native american? seeing as we bought alaska from russia, are eskimo's native russians?) all believe that black people are less intelligent than white people?

Doesn't that kinda change things a little?
I mean it would be one thing if it was "60% of white people believe their particular race is inherently more intelligent than black people."

But it seems to be saying "60% of everyone but black people believe white people are more intelligent than black people..."

It's one thing to toot your own horn...but if everyone is saying it? Especially if it's also those that don't really like white people either?

I don't think I'd be using that US News poll or whatever as a source...

Anyone that isn't straight usually has to "come out," which can be a terrifying experience.

That would explain why all those parades are such a somber and reserved affair.

Many of those in the LGBTQ+ community hide their sexualities for protection from "social shame.

What's the point. Many straight people hide birth defects, small penises, stuff their bras, get plastic surgery, get *** fat injected into their face, do all sorts of things to hide "who they really are," in some way. Some people never "come out." Some people "snap" and end up in a bell tower with a rifle.

That seems to be the norm. Adopt a facade for the sake of civilization and conforming in public.
Then at home it's sweat pants, fart clouds, a jar of peanut butter and a dog whimpering in the shower while the crying game plays in the background.

disabilities also come with stigma.

Everything comes with a stigma, depending on the situation.

people with mental illnesses are often labelled as "crazy" and people try to avoid them.

So do teens with bad acne a star trek fetish and temper problem in high school.
Same with clingy chicks or those with a bunch of cats.

I could go on with these "privileges" but it gets boring as they're all silly.

for those who will assume that 'privilege' only refers to one's race

I just wonder what is the point.
Where does this discussion of "privilege" lead to?
Can you please share with the class exactly how much of my life and to what degree I have benefited from "privilege?"
10%? 93%? 48.234565%?
Exactly what percentage of my wealth, status, security, comfort, fulfillment, whatever, at this precise moment in time is due to "privilege" and how much is effort, intelligence, capability, focus, discipline, luck, random opportunity, education, whatever.
With these "privileges," does that mean any adversity, stress, anxiety, depression, anger, joy, whatever, not count? Not matter?

And what exactly do you want to do about it?
Exactly, specifically and detailed, what laws, what powers (and money) do you want to give to your city, local, state, federal government to determine the preceding questions and what do you expect them to do about it?

Without any kind of details, a point, how you're measuring or how to measure "privilege," (not to mention what you want to do about it), you might as well just start a thread saying "did you know cat spelled backwards is tac? We should acknowledge that exists!"

What is the 'point' of any of these threads? to discuss topics of interest.

pointing out that people believe something is an explanation of how IMPLICIT BIAS can be woven into a community. Many people once believed women werent capable of holding jogs, many believed blacks were sub human, that is not something shared to be worn with a badge of honor, but to reflect instead how much work there is to be done about bias and stereotypes.

generally in any community or country, the elite and elected and media define who 'deserves' and what gives one 'merit'

It goes like this "We have what we have because we worked so hard, and if you just work harder you will have it too."

meanwhile, in the USA, worker productivity has increased six times over, and the wealthy have gotten wealthier, but the worker bees still have the same stagnant lack of growth to their pockets.

People get uneasy talking about privilege, because no one knows how best to solve the problem, or what will be decided.

People also get uneasy talking about overpopulation for the same reason. They would rather let an inadvertent outcome happen rather than talk about it.

I think privilidge is a good thing, like freedom. Everyone should have more of it.

I think ownership priveledge should be to those who care the most, and operator priveledge should go to those with the most technical capacity.

Both the hardworking poor person who is a selfless asset, and the securely planning rich person who makes everyone around him have more privilege, are similar in that they are important to society.
