Big news this morning is this 28 year old minority woman winning over her long term opponent.
She ran on abolishing ICE and Medicaid for all. The district is mostly minorities.
Do you think they were tricked by impossible promises? Sort of like Obama did with his campaign of- if you can't pay your rent, vote Obama. Then the people who elected him said he abandoned them. But reality is, he couldn't pay everyone's rent. It was a false campaign

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district.

This is a huge shocker for the Democrats. Rep. Joe Crowley was the #4 person of power in the Democrat House.

This should scare Democrats on two fronts, She is a very far left-wing socialist and probably the most disturbing thing for Dems is that only 28,000 people showed up to vote!

Where is the Blue wave? LMAO

I think her victory just guaranteed a Republican's win in November.

Good Lord, a socialist beating out a Democrat, what the hell is going on down there?

So much for this blue wave coming in , its more like its heading out to sea.

Do you think they were tricked by impossible promises?

Beats me. What did she actually promise?

Sort of like Obama did with his campaign of- if you can't pay your rent, vote Obama

Did Obama actually say that?
I remember that lady who supposedly had her home saved by Obama, during the first election, it was all over the news, she was freaking out and he became the great savior.
And I remember a lot of "right side" media used a video of a woman who said something along the lines of now that Obama was president she would have all sorts of free stuff; like rent, health care, food, a car. I can't remember exactly what she said, but all her financial worries were over and she'd just won showcase showdown.

Or is this one of those things like with Trump not denouncing the KKK.
Where some supporter says or assumes something and because the president or candidate doesn't spend a bunch of money and time running national commercials, conferences, and tours specifically addressing one little thing then it must mean the president/candidate absolutely supports whatever was said or assumed and everything that anyone could ever interpret from it?

This should scare Democrats on two fronts

I don't think it will.
She's still a democrat, she'll still keep the seat democrat.

probably the most disturbing thing for Dems is that only 28,000 people showed up to vote!

Based on the news and ballotpedia, this was the democratic primary, not the general election.
Look at the republican primary for the district. I don't think they had one as there was only one republican candidate.

It matters more how many show up to the general election.
Also based on ballotpedia, no more than about 20% of the votes have ever gone to republican or conservative in the past 20 years/10 general elections or so.

So I don't think this will really "scare" or bother the democrats all that much.

She is going to abolish ice and give Medicaid to all. She received the welfare vote.

Obama never made a claim that he would pay anyone's rent. And like any elected official, some people felt disappointed and others did not.

Im not sure if this candidate made any promise to 'abolish ICE' or get "Medicaid for all" but she could have shown an interest in seeing that goal accomplished, which may have won over people who are scared of their kids being kicked out of the country or not being able to pay medical bills.

I think she summed it up beautifully in one quote though when she said " "When people feel like they are being spoken directly to," she said on "CNN Newsroom," "I do feel like ... they'll do things like turn out in an off-year, mid-year primary."

again, if you read it. She has these ISSUES on the site. she makes no PROMISE to eliminate ICE or get Medicaid for all. what she does say is this

"You can count on Alexandria to fight for people-centered healthcare more than any other candidate, because she’s the ONLY candidate that doesn’t accept money from Pharmaceutical lobbyists or private insurance companies."

and

"Alex believes that if we are to uphold civic justice, we must abolish ICE and see to it that our undocumented neighbors are treated with the dignity and respect owed to all people, regardless of citizenship status."

nowhere is she promising to make it happen, but to work towards it.

so she is like every other politician she didn't promise but campaigning fooling people that she wants to see it abolished.

Got it ,she is learning well.

Kind of like hope and change.
or building a wall and Mexico paying for it

pardon my french, but only fools are fooled of the difference between someone saying they want to work to see something happen and someone saying it WILL happen.

Since the American government has checks and balances and no dictators, it is unfortunate that citizens and politicians who seem to think or imply any one politician 'makes' it happen themselves. I dont see where this is true of this particular candidate though. She seems clear to me of what she is WORKING for, without promising what will or wont happen.

I think that's the point. An uneducated group fell for a campaign of getting rid of the boogie man and offering a utopia of welfare.

but that is not how the typical uneducated , ill-informed person thinks, this is why your founding fathers implemented the electoral college and not the popular vote, the genius behind it, because they knew many folks were ignorant of politics.

A new term started showing up after she beat him. Liberal-socialist, which is claimed to be different than a democrat. Sounds a good bit like the tea party.

Right now, I haven't heard too much about the tea party anymore. They sorta fizzled out. These lib-socialists will more than likely do the same. It the meantime, they may do more damage than good to the dems.

Moderate dems aren't heard about too much, but they're still there. A few, I'd have voted for if they were my congressman. (John Brademas comes to my mind)

I didn't think much of Lindsay Graham. As I see him conduct himself now, if there was one that could get both sides to come together, he might have been it.

All I have to say about this is "THINK ABOUT IT!" Dem voters just nominated a socialist for office in the US!

Even liberal Dems are worried now where their party is heading

The most disturbing thing about her election and what it says about the Dems and the left-wing media is that she is a racist and called on people not to vote for Joe Crowley because he is WHITE.

I can't even Imagine what the outcry would be if a Republican candidate
told people not to vote for their opponent because of the color of their skin. So many double standards on the left.

You are the first person I have heard to even acknowledge it. Nobody cares the white guy got discriminated against.

Oh well, her supporters are uneducated or they would know that Medicaid is being slashed instead of expanded. We finally have a president who cares about securing our borders.

Their brown skinned candidate is a con.

I guess I voted for Trump because the white guy promised me a tax cut. :joy: We aren't allowed to say that we feel like he understands our issues because he is white.

If Cortez had been campaigning on getting a path to citizenship and better jobs, I would have more respect for her. Promising welfare only proves illegals aren't coming here to work anymore.
