Seamus, thanks for mentioning "Outlander" movie. I just watched it, I like it!

Glad you liked it, it's definitely got a lot going for it.

Yes indeed. I tend to like movies/series with Vikings. Interesting culture.
I'm now thinking, isn't the movie loosely based on Beowulf? Swapping Beowulf for an alien creature and throwing in a few spaceships.

Yes, I think so. Still, full marks for imagination. Much better than the cgi version with Ray Winston and Angelina Jolie.

Not sure if I've seen that movie with Angelina Jolie and Ray Winstone. If CGI means animated I'm not interested either, hihi.
Or does that mean enhanced bits and pieces in it, like they do in Jurassic Park?

The exciting bear attack in The Revenant (2015) was not a trained bear or all CGI, it was a man in a suit, enhanced with CGI.

How The Revenant Got its Bear Attack Scene Right
Meticulous research, computer-generated effects, and a skilled stunt team were behind one of the most memorable animal encounters in cinema’s history.

Midway Movie; Live-action from 1976 Versus CGI from 2019

Update After the Movie Release on Nov 8
β€œI’ve seen most war movies and Midway (2019) is in my top 10.”

IMO, Damn good movie!

My point is, dismissing a film because it has CGI is unfair and you miss a lot of great cinema.

The Thing (1982) is an outstanding film without CGI.
The Thing (2011) is also a great film because of the CGI.
Watching the films in the correct order 2011 then 1982 reveals a marked difference in the quality of the productions.
Rob Bottin did an outstanding job at modeling at the time the film was made but there were aspects of the original story that could not be reproduced.
CGI allowed a higher level experience to the story's intent.
However, along with the CGI there were practical models and prosthetic apparatus used to achieve the films look.

Yes, I've seen lots of films and series where the cgi has been impeccable but it has to come second to the writing and storytelling. There's still a lot of things that I've seen where it's primary purpose seems to be to distract from the fact that the script is just not good.

Oh my, I watch so many poorly written films its sad.
Even the blockbusters seem to have idiots writing them.

One thing that gets me every single time is when someone gets knocked out and ends up in water.
The get pulled out and wake up.
Sorry but when you are unconscious you are still breathing or you are dead.
So underwater unconscious people WILL DROWN!
Yet, you see this time and time again.

Granted, nobody can do what Superman does.
At least CGI allows us to see Superman do the things Superman does.
But, I've noticed that Transformers physics appears in more and more films lately.
Pacific Rim 2 was a great example.

Don't go to LA because in LA nobody pays attention while driving and their brakes don't seem to work.
As a mechanic who did appraisals on accidents I know most cars do not blow up when wrecked.

Some films are just insulting to any normal intelligence.

Btw, The CGI in Avengers Endgame was outstanding but the story was garbage.
I wrote a bunch of Goof entries on it at IMdb.

Crystal, CGI stands for Computer Generated Image.
Its a catch-all term for computer enhanced images so it includes animation but not limited to animation.
VFX stands for Visual Effects. VFX includes CGI, Matte painting, modeling, miniatures and anything needed to enhance or create a visual effect on screen.

One of the problems with CGI is fine detail and lighting transfer.
Hair doesn't look natural and shadows don't quite line up or act right.
With high definition screens nowadays, it sticks out like a sore thumb unless it is done extremely well with a lot of attention to detail.

Effects are getting better tho.
If you compare the original Jurassic Park with Jurassic World 2 there is a marked difference in the quality of the CGI.

I've only seen clips of it myself but it seemed to be realistic animation overlayed on the actors so that Ray Winston became younger, much slimmer and muscular.

Interstellar.
I thought I'd watch it before, turns out I didn't. I will never watch it again either. I clicked through about 1 hour worth of the end. Too long-winded for my taste. I only wanted to see the end, whether they, or he, would make it back or not. Otherwise I would've stopped the movie. Not for me.

Yeah, I didn't care for it either.
Not sure why people made such a big deal about it.
Didn't care for Blade Runner 2049 either.

Thank goodness, I'm not the only one, hahaha. I also don't get why they made it into such a big deal.
I too didn't like Blade Runner, either of them to be honest.

And thanks for the explanation on CGI. I remember people mentioning they could tell during particular scenes in Jurassic Park or World when it went into CGI. I'd never seen it, still haven't, hihi. Glad for it, I'm just enjoying the movies without seeing 'glitches'.

'21 Bridges' which was finally available in HD. I'd been waiting for that for months!
But utter crap.
Most of the first 30 mins is shot in front of flashing police car lights meaning I cannot watch it with my head. Then you don't really get into the story either.
I tried but it isn't worth the time so I switched it off.
