Unfortunately this seems to be the way now. You just have to hope the someone you've talked to is near, or one of the two of you has to travel, or possibly move, to be with that person.
Do I dare say the internet has ruined society? |

I think that when I was a mere youth the only folks that had computers were the govt, military and BIG business. We had to meet girls the old fashioned way and get rejected that way too. There was no Internet or PCs, electronics meant a stereo system, nobody had all these ipads etc. They didn't exist!
This is as good a way as any I suppose and when the girl knocks you down you can move along quickly to the next one. |

imo...
I'd say it would be better to meet in person, but... if you're only here for the forums, then it's best this way of course! |

You can always talk in person later, once you have found a friend and screened the scammers.
I preferred the personals in the local paper, so you were pretty sure they were real, and not too far away. Internet killed it off. At least the pictures are sometimes entertaining; probably not so much for the ladies, with all the D pics they would get. |

When younger I never thought this would be a normal way to meet people , also not to sure it's better then talking to people in person ! What do you think ? I think you're adorable but that is my opinion. I Know I think that when I was a mere youth the only folks that had computers were the govt, military and BIG business. When I was in college microwave ovens were new technology. I remember rabbit ears and black & white TVs. I remember having to let the TV 'warm up' before it came on. I still see computers as a magic box. I have no idea how they turn bits into videos but I thoroughly enjoy the technology. I don't see dating sites as dating. Personal interaction can't be replaced by an IP/TCP connection. What it does do is allow me to locate potentially like-minded women that appeal to me. Its what happens after we locate each other that matters. I was first exposed to the computer technology in 1985 while I was in the military. It wasn't till 1993 that I owned my first computer. I've owned one ever since. I saw enough porn to make me tired of it. I've traveled to another planet and witnessed the birth of the planet. I've read such a wide range of personality that I have a connection with people that I have never met. I've studied physics, sociology, biology and nanotechnology to name a few. I am more than I would have been without the computer and the internet. It has enriched my life in many ways, both significant and insignificant. I have met women by using dating sites, I have met people by participating in forums and chat rooms. I've perpetuated a personification of character for anonymity. I find that I don't need to anymore. I express who I am and how I think freely on the internet for anyone to see. There are people that don't know how to deal with me and people that like who I am. It is the encouragement from others that drive my responses. I am me and I'm not afraid to show it. I put myself out there. I know that if I am to attract someone right for me I need to let them know who I really am. |

It is a good way to find a date but you need to be cautious, always meet for the first time in a very public place during the day time, so you see one another in person before deciding if you want to date them, meeting for a coffee is a good idea. |

think it encourages a short attention span
consume and move on society feeds right into it like speed dating " you have the next 2.5 seconds to get my attention and....go" |

but wait i'll... then...
awww nutz |

It has become a throw away society unfortunately!

When younger I never thought this would be a normal way to meet people...
When I was "younger" I never thought people had to "meet" people, because no matter where you went, there you and everyone else was. I mean k-12, college, you're kinda forced to be surrounded by a large number of people, all in a similar situation as you, with most things in common with you (age, culture, responsibilities), interacting with them every day, sometimes for years. Also growing up in a somewhat small town (compared to having lived in cities over 500k to millions of people) where people either knew you, knew of you, or knew the people that knew you, which means you had a reputation that preceded you, you'd already "met" everyone to some degree. "You're Jims boy, aintcha? Oh, you live on the northside, that's the richside? Oh, you go to Main High? My niece Joan goes there. That's right, she's a cheerleader. Oh, you work at MainMart? My roommate worked at SecondMart, names June? Yeah, she went to Main High, oh she was a year behind you? Didn't I see you in Professer Jope's class?" You never really had to "cold call" people, you didn't have to "meet" complete strangers from god knows what cultural background. Everyone had a profile of basic information set by the situation they couldn't lie about and couldn't really be misinterpreted. also not to sure it's better then talking to people in person ! What do you think
The internet, the phone, it's all impersonal communication. The more impersonal communication, the more reliance upon impersonal communication, the easier it is to either dehumanize, or easier to see, you not as an actual human being, but to objectify each other as a means to an end. No, it's better to talk to people in person. Your brain and central nervous system is set up to function best that way. The internet/online dating is best as a tool to find someone willing to meet and talk to them in person. You aren't stuck in a classroom anymore under an authority structure, you have to drag people in from the urban sprawl corners of your city to meet them. Online dating sites are like a box of north korean chocolates. You never know what you're going to get, you can't trust what the box says, you may not be translating it correctly, there's a high probability they're trying to screw you, so best to just crack it open in a safe environment with plenty of exits. The only people that believe interacting with people online or via impersonal means is better than talking to them in person are either lazy, too scared/insecure, or getting exactly what they want by sitting on the computer keeping others at a distance. |

I disagree because I am a people and those are not my reasons for being at online dating sites. You completely boxed everyone into your categories. What you fail to see is that by making such a comment you have included yourself in your box. Its impossible to know why anyone is using online dating sites because you don't live behind anyone's eyes but your own. Your assumptions are invalid. |

When younger I never thought this would be a normal way to meet people , also not to sure it's better then talking to people in person ! What do you think ? It maybe popular way of meeting online, however, it is not normal. Imo When you meet In person and get to know the person, is normal. Online chatting is just that if you. Never meet the man in Person, you do not really have a relationship. |
