Hillary Didn't 'Win' Majority of the Popular Vote

Democrats are still licking their wounds, their supporters are still shell shocked over President-elect Donald Trump’s upset win over Clinton, and they keep peddling the myth that Clinton won the majority of the popular vote. They use this to undercut the notion that Trump has a mandate. Enter Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) (via The Hill):

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) blasted Donald Trump on Thursday, saying the president-elect doesn't have a mandate for his "politics of hate and division."
"I think most people conclude that the fact that he lost the popular vote is so disturbing to the president-elect because he wants to claim a mandate, but he cannot claim a mandate because a majority of Americans voted against him," Merkley said.

Right now, Clinton leads Trump 48/46 in the popular vote. Is that a majority? No, it’s a plurality.

Hmm. Okay, but on the other hand, it certainly does mean that Trump LOST the popular vote. And, since you didn't notice, the American voting system holds that a plurality victory IS a true victory. So yes, you are wrong, Clinton DID "win" the popular vote, by American voting standards.

Again, it doesn't matter, because the popular vote has NEVER been what determines the Presidency in this country.

"a majority of Americans voted against him," Merkley said.

Not true.

If Clinton did not get 50% or more of all votes, then a majority of voters voted against her.
The same is true for Trump.

Nope. In order to determine who voted AGAINST someone, you have to take another vote entirely. Voting FOR one person, does NOT also mean voting AGAINST the other one.

Right, by some 2.5 million votes.

That's a semantic debate at best.

"Majority" can simply mean "more," or "a greater/greatest number."

It doesn't have to mean "more than 50%."

No one likes crybabies.. no one.

Seems anyone that posts an opinion on the internet does.
Cry babying provides something to offer an opinion on.
So people seem to be seeking them out, at least for "news" stories/opinions to be reposted.

I agree with cire , semantics

in elections, they come up with a term 'plurality' which considers that votes are split up amongst several candidates and a winner may not get more than half

mathematically, majority is simply the greater number

Yeah, but whenever Democrats don't win by playing by the rules, they make up new rules.

First, which rules are you claiming that the Democrats have proposed changing after the fact with this?

Second, the Republicans last tried to reverse the decision of the American electorate, when they decided that seeing to the nations most pressing real problems, took second place to "seeing to it that Obama gets only one term." That failed. Before that, they dedicated themselves to ignoring the most pressing concerns of the Republic, by dedicating themselves to trying to remove the FIRST Clinton from office, because they thought American should not have elected him.
