LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) - An international hunt was under way Friday for a middle school teacher and her former student believed to be on the run after relatives said the 13-year-old boy called home from Mexico.

The boy talked to his aunt on Wednesday, a day after the white Pontiac owned by 25-year-old Kelsey Peterson was spotted by authorities crossing the border.

Peterson, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, fled with the boy after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.

A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday charging Peterson with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Peterson also faces federal charges, including transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity, U.S. Attorney Joe Stecher said. Those charges were filed Thursday.

"The FBI is doing what we need to do to make the Mexican authorities aware that she is wanted," Stecher said.

The boy, Fernando Rodriguez, was an eighth-grader at the school, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said he wasn't sure whether Peterson had been his teacher.

Peterson's car crossed into Mexico on Tuesday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, which separates San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, Lexington police said. The car's license plate was captured by an automated system that scans the plates of all vehicles passing through the entry point.

Laura Rodriguez, Fernando's aunt, said the boy called Wednesday to say he was OK. Fernando's mother, Maria Rodriguez, was relieved to know her son was safe, the aunt said.

"She's much better," Laura Rodriguez said. "He's going to come home sooner or later. He has to."

Judith Bryan, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, said she had no information about the pair and that privacy concerns likely would keep her from discussing the situation.

If the pair tries to return to the United States in the same vehicle, the border officer will see an alert prompted by the license plate number, and the vehicle and occupants will be secured, said Vince Bond, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Diego. Cars typically aren't stopped on the way out because "our focus is on what's entering the United States," he said.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which Peterson and the boy professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to the court documents.

Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was "100 percent faithful" to him and would always be faithful, the court documents state.

Lexington Schools Superintendent Todd Chessmore said he placed Peterson on paid administrative leave on Oct. 25 because of a complaint about her conduct. He would not give details, citing state laws.

Peterson was licensed by the state to teach kindergarten through sixth grade in 2004, the same year she started teaching at the middle school.

Men Account for Almost All Sexual Abuse of Children Cases

· An essay on adult sex offenders in the book Sexual Offending Against Children reported:"It is widely believed that the vast majority of sexual abuse is perpetrated by males and that female sex offenders only account for a tiny proportion of offences. Indeed, with 3,000 adult male sex offenders in prison in England and Wales at any one time, the corresponding figure for female sex offenders is 12!"[1]

· Kee MacFarlane, et al., writing in Sexual Abuse of Young Children: Evaluation and Treatment report:"The large majority of sexual perpetrators appear to be males (Herman and Hirschman, 1981; Lindholm and Willey, 1983)."[2]

· A report by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children states: "In both clinical and non-clinical samples, the vast majority of offenders are male."[3]

· A study in the Journal of Sex Research states that "pedophilia does not exist, or is extremely rare, in women."[4]

Neb. Teacher, Student Arrested in Mexico
By OSKAR GARCIA

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) - A female schoolteacher and the 13-year-old boy she allegedly ran away were found Saturday in Mexico, a prosecutor said.

Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said Kelsey Peterson, a 25-year-old sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was arrested in Mexicali. The boy was turned over to family members who had traveled to Mexico, Waterman said.

Peterson and the boy fled after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said.

The boy, Fernando Rodriguez, was an eighth-grader at the school, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said Rodriguez had been in Peterson's 6th-grade math class.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who may be victims of sex crimes, but the boy's name had been widely publicized as police searched for him.

Peterson's car crossed into Mexico on Tuesday at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, which separates San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, Lexington police said. The car's license plate was captured by an automated system that scans the plates of all vehicles passing through the entry point.

Cars typically are not stopped on the way out because ``our focus is on what's entering the United States,'' said Vince Bond, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Diego.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which Peterson and the boy professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his ``Baby Gurl'' and said their relationship was ``just not about the sex but that it was pretty good,'' according to the court documents.

Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was ``100 percent faithful'' to him and would always be faithful, the court documents state.

Laura Rodriguez also said the family believed Peterson gave the boy a cell phone without his family's knowledge so she could reach him more easily. Messages left on a cell phone for a Kelsey Peterson of Lexington were not returned.

Lexington Schools Superintendent Todd Chessmore said he placed Peterson on paid administrative leave on Oct. 25.

Associated Press writer Anna Jo Bratton in Omaha contributed to this report.

ofendees do not complain

and maybe liked it

hormone raging teen male would be less

same degree of punishment that men usually get

but hey what do i know

(this post does not condone the action
just stating the prejudice in the system)

Jess there has been several high-profile cases of female teachers (falling in love?) molesting their students in the last few years! It was a legitimate question! you used to never hear of it.

Yes adj, it used to be bragging rights for a teen-age boy to say he nailed his hot teacher and it was never reported!

It is sick, esp when you hear of the grown woman professing their love for the child!

One of the reasons you here about it fanta, is because it is rare.

In a population of 300 000 000, how many times to you here of male teachers, priests, doctors, etc, all the professions, molesting young women?

Not as often anymore, huh? Why? Because for one it is so commonplace, and for two, fewer females fess up, and tell someone.

See the imbalance immediately? Yound males, as someone said, 'brag', and young females, are ashamed.

Both genders of young people are victims, of predators..however, it is now only news worthy if it is a woman being the predator.

yawn Too commonplace with men being the predator, so not news worthy.

I hope ALL predators of our young, irrespective of their gender are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

laugh Because This Case involves MEXICO, one might feel that the reason they Flead to Mexico is because the young Stud knew something that is not illuded to here,That being The Age Of Consent in Mexico is 13 so in Mexico they broke NO LAWS and were there leagly...

So by crossing The International Border into Mexico, the case became much more complex, not to mention that The Woman did not force herself on The Boy as the woman can only recieve, the male must be excited...blushing

laugh So her only crime is consenting,as other then that she was just along for the ride...

I didn't bring this up to argue about which sex does it more jess! You seem to want to argue?

I brought it up and asked the question because I want to know what possesses a grown woman to profess her undying love for a 13 yr old boy!

As far as how often women do it, I think a man would know more about that than a woman. The boys with teen sex drives do not often report it. Instead feel a sense of pride that they nailed the good looking older woman, esp if its a teacher. Many times even when they are over-heard talking about it to their friends, adults do not believe it!

On the other hand, little girls have been learning since birth, from their mothers, how to use their sexuality to get what they want. Often they lie about the teachers attempting sex with them and often they tease and flirt to attract it! We are talking about teens here and not pre-teens, and teen age girls can be pretty manipulative!

But back to my question maybe I'll get somewhat of an answer this time.
What possesses a grown woman to, an educated woman, to not just partake in sex with a child but to profess her undying love for them? A couple of them were even married!

The difference is that women get an easy ride. When they get out of prison, they are celebritys. Society (at least the US variety) is really blind when it comes to this issue.
