She just wants to open a bank account . I am sure if divorced people were forced to keep accounts in their married name forever .. There would be many unhappy people who do not want to be identified by their ex's name . When it comes to identity why is there such an issue .. Why are people so threatened by transgender . I don't understand the fear !! From the OP: ""The father of a 17-year-old student is campaigning to change Britain’s banks because he cannot find one that will give his child, who identifies as genderqueer and non-binary,..."" Genderqueer: denoting or relating to a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders. noun a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders. Non-binary: Non-binary gender (see also genderqueer ) describes any gender identity which does not fit within the binary of male and female . Those with non-binary genders can feel that they: Have an androgynous (both masculine and feminine ) gender identity, such as androgyne. Have an identity between male and female, such as intergender . Have a neutral or non-existant gender identity, such as agender or neutrois . Have multiple gender identities , such as bigender or pangender . Have a gender identity which varies over time, known as genderfluid . Have a weak or partial connection to a gender identity, known as demigender. Be intersex and identify as intersex, know as amalgagender Have a culturally specific gender identity which exists only within the culture they or their ancestors belong to. Otherwise feel that their gender is neither fully male nor fully female . In other words...they're nuttier than a port-a-potti at a peanut festival......the dad too. |

Jars; Not people. I personally do not see a need for Gender identity to be on many things, including banking documents, since we say we do not discriminate by gender or is that just lip service? Certainly is clear that it is in this thread where assigning gender seems to be more important than anything including if the young person was a good credit risk. I personally would prefer to have the majority of my documents gender neutral since discrimination is still rampant in many systems; not the least of which is banking. Something I have experienced first hand when trying to acquire business financing. I named my business after my two sons and invariably they would ask for the "owner" to sign stuff when it was my money and good credit that would pay off the note. Unless every banking document is going to have a photo ID that has to jive with the account I don't see how gender identity even has anything to do with account identity clarification. With the way people dress/behave now days you can't tell in many cases. |

I do actually agree with you, except for your last few words. It could have been settled so easily, and from what we read the Father should take the bull by the horns, but something tells me there's something underlying in her mentality. He or she sounds like a mixed up kid and I feel for her Father |

people seem to be confusing the issue here... it can get any bank account it wants, by checking a box either male or female... apparently it doesn't matter which one, but one needs to be checked... it can still be an it all it wants after that... will that kill it checking a stupid box? no...will it change anything about it after a box is checked? no....
so check a damn box and go live your life... |

even without documenting labels, people will perceive them
I understand why 'boxes' are important if we are ever to truly attempt to understand how different demographics are treated,,,, |

Reb man, believe it or not you're one of my favourites on here, but don't read too much into that, i'm not gay or queer or genderqueer or whatever they call it these days. I think we just disagree. If you were here now I'd shake your hand and give you a bear hug. And a few beers of course take it easy |

even without documenting labels, people will perceive them I understand why 'boxes' are important if we are ever to truly attempt to understand how different demographics are treated,,,, The sad part about making decisions by non related demographics is the fact that often leads to unnecessary "Red Lining" which was and still is a practice to discriminate against people which was clearly documented in the USA when Non-whites sought banking privileges. It used to be based on race more so than citizenship or national origin but both apply past and present. It was not that long ago that African Americans actually owning a home was an anomaly and still many families rent sometimes even inter generation-ally the same property or home. Often businesses were at least partially owned by white silent partners well into the 1960's and 70's. If you go into the inner city a lot of the property that is wholy minority populated is still not minority owned. A serious problem when disasters like Katrina occurred and absentee owners sometimes estates were holding the property for years and have to be tracked down and processed. |
