I have read about them and would love to meet one.

I don't think I could live without modern stuff like dishwasher.

Their gardens I would love to learn about.

The quilts they do. I will have to buy one. The love the put into it. Reminds me of Rains.

Life in long dresses would be hard to live in.

I wonder if I could wear jeans or shorts underneath. Lol.

No car
Mmmmm I don't mind horse riding.

No cell phone sorry that would be far to much
Arhhhh no mingle!
Now thats where I draw the line

Yes, I draw the line at 'no internet' as well!
The dishwasher is doable ... I've lived without one for over 3 yrs now ... You get used to it. And doing the dishes ain't too bad, a good excuse to sing and dance :)
Dresses, not gonna work!
No cell phone, I could do that too.
Just as long as I got me internet. And a drum kit laugh

What do they do when they have physical problems though? Are they allowed to have a walker? I spose a scoot mobile is out of the question...
But like me, I got back problems, and a neck injury. What would my life be like in such a community?
Would they simply shoot me?

Surely they would use some form of aids to assist you.

I don't think I could go back to living in a restricted life not since I discovered my mouth.
They would get sick of answering to why?

I t would be good to experience it for a few days.
Their crafts would be amazing.

Their idea of "bundling" intrigues me .. Where a courting couple are wrapped in separate blankets and lie together on a bed for intimacy not involving sexual touch .. .. Sounds fun /-)

What???? How??? intimacy without touch thank god that I am not amish. I can't keep my hands away from her

Wow that's putting temptation right there.

Sounds like fun
As long as I can wear jeans and we have a dishwasher.

My friend Joanne and I were talking about that on our bucket list. I will show her the pictures.
We did watch a program but it gave a bad expression about them.

Here in Alberta we have colonies of Hutterites.. they are kind of similar to the Amish.. but the Hutterites believe in using modern tools.... thay own large Farms here... they make their own clothes similar to The Amish but more color.. and they drive vehicles..
But they stick to themselves..
The colonies can have up to 30 to 50 families living in them.. they all work together for the betterment of the colony.. you might say they are similar to ants... I mean that in a good way

If you like that sort of thing ...
The first does have a warm, cosy feel and look, but the second is horrible ohwell
Just curious if its all handmade...with no power tools...if so, its great no matter how it looks

Yes indeed, good question. The first I'd say it's possible, except for the handles used.
But the second ... I seriously doubt that is made without power tools...

wondering ... is home education allowed in Canada?
I don't think these ppl would get away with this sort of thing over here, cos kids have to go to school. It's law. Till they're 17 & 7 months
If your kids don't go to school, it's breaking the law and you end up in court and getting seriously fined.
Since these ppl live in Canada that way ... I guess home education is allowed?

The Amish (/ˈɑːmɪʃ/; Pennsylvania Dutch: Amisch, German: Amische) are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships, closely related to but distinct from Mennonite churches, with whom they share Swiss Anabaptist origins. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology. The history of the Amish church began with a schism in Switzerland within a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann.[2] Those who followed Ammann became known as Amish.[3]

In the early 18th century, many Amish and Mennonites immigrated to Pennsylvania for a variety of reasons. Today, the most traditional descendants of the Amish continue to speak Pennsylvania German, also known as "Pennsylvania Dutch," although a dialect of Swiss German is used by Old Order Amish in the Adams County, Indiana area.[4] As of 2000, over 165,000 Old Order Amish live in the United States and about 1,500 live in Canada.[5] A 2008 study suggested their numbers have increased to 227,000,[6] and in 2010 a study suggested their population had grown by 10 percent in the past two years to 249,000, with increasing movement to the West.[7] Unlike most Americans who have had a birthrate too low to maintain the population since the early 1970s, most of the Amish continue to have 6–7 children while benefiting from the major decrease in infant and maternal mortality in the 20th century. Between 1992 and 2013, the Amish population increased by 120%,[8] while the US population increased by only 23%.[citation needed]

Amish church membership begins with baptism, usually between the ages of 16 and 25. It is a requirement for marriage within the Amish church. Once a person is baptized with the church, he or she may marry only within the faith. Church districts average between 20 and 40 families, and worship services are held every other Sunday in a member's home. The district is led by a bishop and several ministers and deacons.[9] The rules of the church, the Ordnung, must be observed by every member and cover most aspects of day-to-day living, including prohibitions or limitations on the use of power-line electricity, telephones, and automobiles, as well as regulations on clothing. Most Amish do not buy commercial insurance or participate in Social Security. As present-day Anabaptists, Amish church members practice nonresistance and will not perform any type of military service. The Amish value rural life, manual labor and humility, all under the auspices of living what they interpret to be God's word.

Members who do not conform to these community expectations and who cannot be convinced to repent are excommunicated. In addition to excommunication, members may be shunned,[10] a practice that limits social contacts to shame the wayward member into returning to the church. Almost 90 percent of Amish teenagers choose to be baptized and join the church.[10] During adolescence rumspringa ("running around") in some communities, nonconforming behavior that would result in the shunning of an adult who had made the permanent commitment of baptism, may meet with a degree of forbearance.[11] Amish church groups seek to maintain a degree of separation from the non-Amish world, i.e. American and Canadian society. There is generally a heavy emphasis on church and family relationships. They typically operate their own one-room schools and discontinue formal education after grade eight, at age 13/14.[10] Until the children turn 16, they have vocational training under the tutelage of their parents, community, and the school teacher.

Thanks Conrad very interesting.

We do have something similar here in the south island. They are called Glorivale it's a group start with Neville Cooper. They have set up a school and day care for their own
There's at least more than 11kids in a family and get this they don't have their own homes the live in huge bunk homes and families have one to two bedrooms.
Kids sleep in the same room as the adults.
The government pays the education and a certain amount for each child but it doesn't go to the parents. It goes to the leaders. The all wear the same. Their names are changed because it was your identity in the world. The people don't get pay the work for board. They come under a charitable organisation so they don't have to pay taxes.
Those in the leaders are really old men. Makes me wonder. Neville Cooper (Hopeful Christian) has been to jail for sex with under age girls.

They are under the watchful eye.

firstly the Amish mafia is bs, the Amish don't allow you to take their photo, don't own mirrors or televisions. I've worked with many, many Amish and they're an intriguing group for sure. I live in York, pa and used to work in Lancaster so contact with the Amish was commonplace for years. they do anything for neighbors, great carpenters, no one works harder and they're physical strength is crazy! now they've got some...well what we would perceive to be odd "customs" such as bathing once a month, animals are here for us to use etc...little known fact...and I'm not bashing anyone here just look it up but they have a fairly serious inbreeding issue. but from my own personal experiences I've found the Amish to be charming and they make the best beef jerky and root beer I've ever tried. if ever in Lancaster, pa check out the Amish markets if you get a chance, it will offer an opportunity to try Amish food, goods and mingle with some Amish!
