Topic: Painful associations

Has anyone else ever associated some of their favourite songs with a certain, special somebody and then lost that person and found themselves unable to listen to it anymore?

Sorry to start a topic on a downer, but I'm just curious if this has ever happened to other people. It doesn't have to be music, it could be a film, a place, anything really. Anything that you used to love intently but now find painful to behold.
I'll give specifics if anyone's interested.
Thanks!

Freebird by Lynryd Skynyrd...

Wayward Son by Kansas...

Both are associated with my brother Matthew and played at his wake and funeral

Oh yes. I used to make music compilations of my favorite songs. Still do, but when I hear certain songs now, if I'm listening to the radio, I have to turn the dial......

oh pete what a wonderful gentle soul you are.

heres a story, my grandfather (papa) and i were very very close. he was an old farmer and i remember visiting his farm all the time and thinking he could do anything. after he died a song that continues to speak to me and makes me blubber every time i hear it is randy travis "walk on water" its about a little boy who thought his grandpa could do anything here's some of the lyrics.

he wore starched white shirts, buttoned at the neck
and he sit on the porch and watch the chickens peck
and his teeth were gone, but what the heck
i thought that he walked on water

said he was a cowboy when he was a young'n
he could handle a rope and he was good with a gun
and my momma's daddy was his oldest son
and i thought that he walked on water

and he was 60 years old in 63
and i loved him and he loved me
and Lord i cried the day he died
cus i thought
that he walked
on water.
sad sad sad sad sad

R.I.P. papa i miss u soooo much.

I find that it doesn't even have to be a person. If I stumble upon a mix cd that I made during a less-than-pleasant period of my life, I usually can't listen to it. Actually, this happened tonight.

Ahhh, Pete....hugs to you.

This is fitting of my mood.

Broken Hallelujah kills me as a whole. Reminds me of all of those I have lost.

Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father brings me to tears every time. However, as much as a happy cry as a sad cry. My Daddy was a smooth dancer and my folks were awesome on the dance floor together. I guess that is what dancing with someone for almost 50 years will do for you.

{{{Miguel}}} you are never alone! I love ya too much!

I burned a cd once which had songs on it that were popular at the time and were symbolic or expressed how I felt when I saw this one guy I was dating at the time. every time I went to see him I put that cd on in my car. now every time I listen to it, I think of driving to his place at night.

I have a hard time with all the holiday specials that are shown on television.
The year my little brother turned 7 I watched them and cried because he was in the hospital. He had just been diagnosed with diabetes and had to spend several weeks in the hospital.
He passed away in '96 at the age of 23.

Absolutely. Though I don't avoid those songs...it's just I can only listen to them at certain times.
