separated in the United States usually means living in separate homes but not divorced.

some couples may do this for years before actually going through the legal process of getting a divorce

Separation is one of those words that has several interpretations and generally it a pretty iffy term.

It may mean one spouse is a way from the computer screen to everything including vanished to parts unknown for years just never bothered to divorce.

Usually it does mean living apart for some period of time but again that can be someone away at a job, in jail, or hospitalized, or one or both are contemplating divorce.

Often one or both will swear affection and sex have stopped and it is just a matter of sorting out the financial assets and child care issues but usually it is because one or the other got caught doing something and the other is considering divorce if the remorse and apology are not sufficient.

Some states actually make couples live separated for a period of time before they can even file for divorce; often this is or at least was related to pregnancy or finding the absent spouse.

Legal separation is usually one partner being assigned temporary basic maintenance, child custody, and a freeze on any mingled funds often with assets being documented and family counseling required but not always.

Divorce is when the marriage is ended by the courts. Many will lie and say they are divorced but they are actually just living separate or pretending they are not in fact still legally married.

its safest to just stay single, to be honest

communication is going to make the difference, if someone is of interest, get to know them and simply ask the situation,,,

State of michigan requires 6 months from time of divorce filing to finalization due to children.

Separated means still legally married despite the details.

Not all the time.
The best thing would be to ask...
How long separated?
children involved?
Papers filed?

I have dated separated after having several questions answered, in saying that some still reconcile back together which on one hand is good unless you are one dating said separated person..

^^^^^ This.. If a guy doesn't divorce his wife, to my mind he doesn't want to leave her.
Like someone in here still taking "Kleenex" from the box... to me totally weird that someone could be on a dating-site, looking for love, yet still shag the missus ...
To each his own I guess, but to me, when a relationship is over - as in: we don't want to live together nor build a future together anymore - I want a divorce. If you still want to see each other, but not live together anymore, you have a LAT relationship. Meaning you're not available to date, unless you have an open relationship. But then you're status should say that you are involved.
That's how I see it.

I would never date a man that is still (intimately) involved with his ex.
Nor a newly divorced. Let him find his feet first... I have no interest in being the "rebound woman".

EDIT. want to add to it that it's not a judgment of anyone here, even though I refer to someone... It's just something I've come across a lot online, so despite that short referral I meant it as a general thing.

I can relate to the annoying feeling of someone complaining about their ex. One of my friends does it. Everyday. When I get fed up of it, I make an excuse to leave. I get that she hurt his feelings, but for gods sake, give it a rest. laugh :tired:
