they just passed a law in KC MO that if anybody break in your apt or car you can use whatever is mean defend your property..

i do agree with the other people change locks or put chains on the door.. landlord need 24hr notice to enter your place..

good luck on the advice you have been given

do you have a stereo?

you can set up a motion sensor that can pick up on noise & set your stereo on that plays noises to make the guy go away..

I am a building engineer and have worked in the field for 26+ years

Yes what he did was not only legal it was proper. It would have been nice to get a notice first as this was scheduled work not an emergency, but the landloard has the right to enter and maintain his property. Different management companies have diffverent policies with thisflowerforyou

Boy, I have never had a problem like that!! My landlord is required to give written notice of intent to enter, and the repair people they send will not come in unless I am home. Put all the freakin chainlocks you want on that door!! They are not illegal!! changing the actual door lock or deadbolt lock to where the landlord does not have a key is the only thing that is illegal. Also, if the problem continues you could just say to him that you don't want him coming in unless you are there because in the past you had items stolen and had to involve the police...it's a lie, but one that is designed to get his attention and be subtly threatening.

Goldstarflowerforyou ,

I live in an apartment, also. One thing the staff tells us--and it's in the renter's agreement--is that NO ONE is allowed to let themselves into your apartment without okaying it via an advance notice or phone call. Even apartment dwellers have "renter's right's" just like house renters do. If the staff at your apartment still insists on entering unannounced, I think the earlier suggestion of chain locks is a good idea. A battery-operated alarm(which you can buy at any hardware store, plus wal-Mart)can be easily installed on your front door in case the apt. staff ever comes in while you're napping. The noise one of those things makes going off right in their ears will make them think twice before entering unannounced.

I live in Indiana, alone as well. Even though my apartment complex is under a private owner, they always give me some notice/warning of when they need to enter my apartment. Still waiting on them to repair the carpeting when they removed the wall/gas heaters - August 2006. Haha... I work just about everyday, so I'd rather be here anyway while they're here. Look it up in your lease, should state when they need to do maintenence or something, should be some sort of info listed.

:) Good times. I have a chain lock as well as a deadbolt, which both were here before I moved in.

Good luck with everything.

it is proper to knock or ring the bell before you enter a tenant's space. It bis also proper to wait or return later if requested by the tenant from your post I read he did these things

If I am an older male and know full well that i have a tenant that keeps to herself, lives alone and is very young. You should have the HUMAN decency to give a notice to her so she is not scared by some man entering her apt rite after getting out of the shower...gimme a break it's an asshole thing to do
