Topic: Rent or own | |
---|---|
I own my place, as humble as it is.
I purchased when I felt I was ready to settle in somewhere. I'm content with that decision. Rent, IMO is just lining someone else's pocket. What's your position. And, do you own or rent? |

True its lining someone else's pocket.I rent because I dont know where I want to be long term, and if I get bad neibors ,I can simply leave.

Three hours from here, I have another place.
I lost interest in improving it when a tornado blew off 30 foot of new roof. The main part is still covered and eventually I will just go ahead and put a small mobile home on it. It's an acre and a half with corrals, fenced and all utilities in place. |

I would rather own. but at least i get someone else to fix junk. I dont much like ohio, but until the boy is done with school, ohio it is. I wont have to worry about whether the market is strong enough to break even id I were to sell. later I will probably buy, but not now. I will probably go back to massachusetts at that point, but who knows? well well....don;t like Ohio? Why I never a long time ago I was a transplanted easterner and it took me a long time to get used to being here. For the first 15-20 odd years here I mostly hung out with others who were also NOT from here. In what is now 30+ years, I have yet to make but one good friend who is a native Ohioan and SHE MOVED!!!!! Ohioans don;t seem unfriendly ....just a little closed.... Prolly just a cultural divide. I am here also cuz the kids are here. |

When I saw that roof gone I was shocked and awed.
Then I got pissed. Then cried. I came back to where I am now and realized why it happened. Providence. When I remembere to remember, I live that life. I am always were I am because that's where I'm needed and to be ready to be of service. While I was gone my neighbors home burned to the ground. They were building a block, one room place to temporarily live and add onto. The inspector wouldn't pass it so they could get power or water. They ran a cord from my place and we put a water connection also. If I had stayed up north, those folks would have been homeless. |

Rent for now. I have a good deal. Eventually I will buy, but not in a hurry.

rent is my preference, being long term beholden to a bank is too much of a stres
nto to mention worrying about asthetics and repairs around and in the house,, Im less stressed leaving that to somoene else Im gonna send money to SOMEONE each month, whether its an owner or a bank,,,at least with an owner Im not iikely to be on the line for decades |

Hmmm...put away the pitch forks ..i own more than one
.it's a alberta!! you were crazy ,not to buy property before the oil boom hit. ..and it's no fun being a landlord...well except for when going to the bank. |
|

and to be fair, after property taxes and upkeep, are factored in !! ..i only charge 18 percent..

I am here also cuz the kids are here. I think that's true, and I tend to be a little on the shy & quiet side anyway. there's a lot of good folk here, and I have become a little set in my way too. Honestly I do not worry about it too much. I also miss the ocean!!! agreed |

Great for you,Ms Blondie.
Many don't understand that property, wisely bought is a win/win investment. Especially in Texas. 10 years is the longest loan. Two other places I paid off in two years each. Tax sales. Sold the home that was in the city limits. |

This thread Willing 2 is a very good one for me because its a debate I have with myself everyday. I rent right now a nice place on the river about 50 miles from the ocean. I could buy but I am conflicted because I don't know if I will stay in the area. My parents are getting elderly and my step dad is in poor health so I might have to stay awhile and it is beautiful here in Myrtle Beach, but to be honest If I was free and clear I would head to Texas I love the warm weather and the ocean is a must for me. Who knows but I am leaning towards buying it would be nice to be king of my own castle.

Call tax assessors office where you might want to relocate to.
Ask for a list of tax sale properties. The list usually includes addresses and you can use an internet map to get a good, up close, satellite view. |

Own it lock stock and barrel well except for what the state wants in taxes each year... I actually bought mine a year after my divorce.. But honestly at times I wish I rented hard to keep it all up by myself....And wish I lived in the country.....

you can't go wrong with real estate!!.
unless you get upside down in your mortgage... which unfortunately alot of people in the States we're.. when the economic crash hit.. . for my partners and I.. it was a buyer's feeding frenzy.. the problem becomes how long can you afford to sit on the property... before you can sell and see a return on your investment... and buying is always better than renting... no offense.. . but when you retire you do not want to be paying rent... and then there's always the equity you have built up... ... it is a long term investment.. property you can will down to your children.. |

everyone is different, kids in my family want to grow up and have their own homes,, not those that were their parents taste decades ago,,,,,
cant take a house with me when I die either for me, retnting is the better choice,,, only way I can see the benefit of biying if its just to sell for profit and not to live in,,, |
