Depends on how you use it.

The lowest form of wit but often the funniest. People often confuse satire with sarcasm, I think you'll find you appreciate hilarity in satire and only youthful redress in sarcasm. Unfortunately excellently intelligent satiricists are often accused of being merely sarcastic personalities. There's a world of difference. Sarcasm is basically where you say the same thing backwards, satire is where you imaginatively depict a fallacious premise. eg. "You look stupid" 1. sarcasm, "Of course I do, I wore the same clothes as you today." 2. satire, "It's always been my dream and now you've finally justified it." in example 1. someone gets punched. in example 2. someone looks confused. both make their point but one takes a fighter to bring it home, with a fight, you have to win for anyone to get it if pressed. The other you don't need a fight or to win a fight and the point still hits home everywhere that takes any notice. ie. if you can make a point to teach an idiot they're just being idiotic without demanding an aggressive response, you've got social skills. And thus the difference between sarcasm and satire is skillz. But most people are appreciating satire when they mention sarcasm, wtf knows why that is >.< |

They say sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. I tend to disagree. What are your views? I don't see sarcasm as being the least bit funny. IMO It's meant to sting and bring some level of offense even if hidden behind a smirk or wry smile. Throwing jabs or darts at another's heart then feigning it's merely a joke is twisted and abuses the one on the receiving end. |

Overall, there are some awesomely sarcastic responses!  ...Sarcasm abounds in social interaction and conversation here and everywhere...People use it for all sorts of reasons and those who claim they don't are social mutants who believe they possess an X-gene that makes them just a tad bit smarter than everyone else in the room ...Studies show (not prove) that the use of sarcasm is male dominant and that females are more sensitive to it than males...Since so many males are emotional slobs and so many females are ultra sensitive, that fits...Considering the popularity of cyber socializing, I don't think the use of sarcasm is going to go away any time soon, but I do think ALL OF US should stop and think about the consequences and the implications of what we say BEFORE we say it...

Sarcasm: 1. the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. 2. harsh or bitter derision or irony. 3. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark. Wit: 1. mental sharpness and inventiveness; keen intelligence. 2. a natural aptitude for using words and ideas in a quick and inventive way to create humor. According to the definitions relating to the sarcasm/wit comparison in the OP's post, I think there's a distinct difference between something we can tell is a witty remark and something we can tell is a sarcastic remark. One is meant to be humorous to provoke a smile, the other is meant as a derision to subtly hurt someone's feelings. And it doesn't take a genius or an overly sensitive person to easily decipher which is which especially if its they who are being targeted.

Sarcasm, irony, flippancy, satire, banter, rancor, etc..... all have their place.....derision. mockery, ridicule, scorn do not....
bust out whatever dictionary you want A friend once told me (in my teens) "You're a lot funnier when you aren't making fun of people!" I was humbled....and took THAT to heart! |
