If you let him work after incident you can't fire w/o paing unemployment. Fire with good cause, benefits are usually dealyed 6-8 weeks, matbe even 3-4 months.

When my dad owned his business if someone made a mistake...he would always give them a chance! BUT if they would have tried to cover it up and fix it on their own like that...heck no!! It was costing my dad money and also making him look bad!!
If the guy would have came to you and said something, that would be a whole different story!! I think you need to take him into the office and let him go in private!! I hate bosses that fire employees in front of others just to look big!!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do flowerforyou

I agree with Puffins and unsure. We're here for ya if ya start feelin worse or need to vent. Thumper can probably come up with some more things that are worse than getting fired.

Besides, maybe losing this job will be his first step in the direction to the job where he truly belongs.

the worst part of this is the fact that he tried to buff it
out without admitting his mistake. if you can afford to keep
him and he knows the size of the hit you take to do so he
might be appreciative enough to be a very loyal employee for
a very long time...but that requires character and his lame
cover up attempt does not speak well of his character....
although people do freak-out under this type of stress..

i don't suppose there is any way this is insured?!?

if there is a way for him to help repay over time, and if
you can find a way to give him another chance, and if he is
otherwise respected and liked by his co-workers then you
will inpire a lot of loyalty and respect from all of them if
you keep him...but if there is any real chance that he will
continue to make serious screw ups anything like this then
you both have to face the fact that he is simply not cut out
for this job.

You have to think of the exponential word of mouth as well. He tried to cover it up, i.e decieve you, and the rest of the shop, and now the customer is not going to have anything good to say about your shop. He just may have cost you customers as well. You know how it goes.....1 person tells another, they tell two more, they each tell more and more and more.......nope, not good for you Hon. Get rid of him.

How sad I didnt read this thread before he got fired...

My suggestion would have been to ask him what he feels should happen...offer him an out....he may have chose to say fire my arse, he may have said you own my arse till the debt I created in time and money is paid.

He tried to cover it up, cause he knows the weight of what he has done...reparation is better than condemnation...he has no chance now of learning that lesson...

Geez who hasnt tried to cover up a f*ck up? Something of the folks broken, playing ball in a house?

And before you all leap down my throat and say business is different...humans and learning isn't...two mistakes in 7 months ....geez I think I made a gazillion in some of my jobs....my bosses were patient people, and I offered the overtime to restore my wrongs, and a reduction in wage to cover it.

What did they get? A loyal employee who saw bosses as people not something to be feared.

No life was jeopardised....a car, an inanimate object was harmed, and agreed costly mistake...was what happened.

geez...I hope I never have to be judged for my mistakes in life...I would be a homeless destitute person.

When a short-term employee costs you that amount of money because he is careless...The answer is obvious!!!!!!!!!!

LOL well now Big guy the company I work for is a construction company that puts in underground cable for AT & T. And we have some some pretty good damages and at times have pulled so much out of there check a week to pay for the damage. But twice in 7 months shsssssh and cost ya that much all I can say is write him up have it on paper work you can actaully fight the un-employement with that case I have done it and won agaisnt an employee that caused a bunch of damages also. That worked for about the same amount of time the guy is careless. Next time it might not be just a vechicle it could be a person. Which we had a guy get his arm broke due to a guy no paying attention fired his ass too and he did not get unemployement either. Sorry ones like that ya keep them your asking for it but do the paper work and put it all done on paper. Actually ya should have it in the policy that they have to sign that all damages will come out of there checks for if you don't by law you can not take it out. Good luck and keep your cool today. flowerforyou

You gave him a second chance, he screwed up again...you made the right choice in letting him go. People need to be accountable for their actions...accident or not!

Lmao that sounds like a great ideal to keep there last check to help cover some of the cost. But........... WRONG THOUGHT you can't do that it is against the law to hold and employeee's
pay check unless they have things that actually belong to the company and must return it first. Other wise unless you had them sign a paper stating in case of damages etc that money will be pulled out of there check each week and and only pull so much. Then even to do that is illegal. You would be setting yourself up for a lawsuit. And sad thing they would win hands down. Just like if they quit the only thing you could do is take it to small claims court. But if there is nothing in writing with the employee stating they understand they must pay for the damages. There would be a chance that even in small claims court your case would be thrown out. So most buisness take there loss and get rid of the employee before something much worse happens. Just need to have that termination paper filled out for the reasons. Not a must but at times can cover ones a\zzzz lmaobigsmile
