No one can ever explain it to me either! lol. I'm pretty sure the expression can have multiple meanings, but what I meant when I used it is, "When something good just kinda falls in your lap through no effort on your part, don't question or criticize it, just be grateful!"

I always thought it meant that if you get something free appreciate it, and don't go looking for flaws. The use of the horse was because people can determine the horse's age by their teeth.
