I never really understand how this coffee thing works in the States. All I know is what I see in movies / series: ppl buying coffee before work, during work and after work.
That concept is somewhat alien to me. The only time I buy a coffee somewhere, is when I'm traveling for any length of time and need my 'shot' of caffeine, or when I am on holiday and have no access to my own coffee machine.
Why buy your coffee and not make it yourself at home? Isn't a coffee machine a standard item in the US kitchen? Don't you take time to make coffee in the mornings?
I remember from my days in Australia hardly anyone had a coffee machine (filter coffee), just instant coffee sick Are the States like that too?

Not criticizing, just curious and interested.

No most of us in the states have an actual coffee machine that makes at least 12 cups or more. A lot of people have been buying the k-cup machines but I dunno. I drink coffee cause I love the taste I drink it so much the caffeine doesn't really do anything for me anymore. That instant chit doesn't even remotely taste like coffee.

To understand the concept of how the States thrive on coffee is simple. Even tho there is this stereotype of Americans being lazy and arrogant. We for the longest time were a nation of doers. The people are not lazy and actually really get irritated at laziness. We try and pack as much work into our days as possible, we work long hours with very little vacation time. Most of us have to do this just to scrape by. Coffee became our nations fuel for that. We also have a real problem with amphetamines in this country for that reason as well. We are and I hope always will be a hardworking and blue collar nation. flowerforyou

I think Lionbrews interpretation is spot on, but thought I'd add my own from another American.

Most of us do have machines at home. Many make their coffee in the morning, if not most. For me since mine doesn;t make under 4 cups well, if I only have time for one because I'm running late, I 'll buy a cup. Also we like to try different coffees or coffee/tea beverages. That is why some days we'll skip our at home brew and go out to Starbucks or the like.

Places like S-bucks also serve Chai teas and Chai teas lattes which are popular. And all kinds of specialty coffee beverages hot and cold. There are also many different grinds and flavors of coffee from all over the world. Many do not keep that much variety in their own kitchend and like to step out for a cup.

Your observation from the films is also spot on. We drink coffee any time of day. After beer and water, it's probably the nation's mosst popular drink. We even have coffee jokes akin to our culture.

We joke about cops drinking coffee at doughnet shops instead of working (often true - eyewitness here lol) and we sympathize with long distance truck drivers and their need for a bottomless cup. America is a big country. Overland from coast to coast is more than a long drive :)

it is a social beverage in the fashion that a pint would be as well as a "shot of caffeine."

I think the Dutch drink loads of coffee as well, but we don't usually buy it like you do. We also don't do (not like?) all that many flavours, which as far as Denis Leary is concerned, is nuts in the US, hahaha.
We do have SB in Holland, but not many. I've only been to one, in the airport in Rotterdam. I assume we have one in Amsterdam, Rotterdam etc. as well.

All in all I take it Denis Leary was spot on
