Fairy Tales

Plain as the day on her face
the night in her eyes,
never far removed
from bare knuckled presence.

A fighter she attested.
A survivor.
Hard life clung to her
cloaking what little soft allure
she managed to retain.

Vulnerable allowed when her arms
wrapped around her little ones
drinking in their sweet innocence
awestruck by their bright eyes.

Depended upon, she was.
Embraced in the moment
as they clung to her.
Just as brief...they were gone.

Her demeanor straightened.
Sight changed to reflect task.
She lived in the here and now
where time could only be grasped
as habit melded to routine.

...in the still dark,
only pulse reverberated.
Inhale to exhale
deafening silent gasps
awaiting rain
to cool from the heat.

Change would come
immersing recognition
once again like promises kept
...a given...
Once upon a time when dreams
could become.
But that was
a long, long time ago.
