On a site like this, where writing is how we communicate, do you think someone's writing style is important? Do misspelled words and text speak bother you? Are grammar and punctuation important to you?
Disclaimer: This is not geared toward anyone or any threads. These are just general questions, since we all use writing to communicate here. |

Depends on the topic, I could really care less anymore.
Serious topic and I'll throw any credibility out of the window if it looks like absolute s* circa 1st grade; bulls*ing topic? F* it. |

Not really.. but it does make you come across more intelligently when these things are correct. I will say that much. Sometimes typos make you look kind of dumb.. only time it 'bothered' me so to speak. Outside of that not the biggest deal.

It depends on whether or not spelling and grammar errors are a distraction.
If you want to avoid spelling errors, then I recommend that you use the Google Chrome web browser, because it will let you know (in a majority of cases) if you have made a spelling error. |

Firefox has built in spell check as well! |

For the most part, I am quite fluent in typonese. I do, however, find a lot of errors distracting.
And text speak just annoys me. Not the lol's or smily faces but complete sentences that leave me wishing I could buy a vowel are just painful. I don't tend to stick with those conversations. |

It's not really a big deal to me unless the post is so bad that I can't understand it.

Typos are fine, as everyone makes them. When people start purposefully misspelling words, I find that it distracts from what they're writing. And I find it hard to read entire sentences/paragraphs/emails of text speak. An abbreviated word here or there, though? No problem.
I will often ask those who punctuate with lol what's so funny. Most of the time, they can't give me an answer. Basically, if it's short and readable, I'll probably give it a shot. If it's a long post/email full of text speak or spelling/grammar errors, I will probably run out of patience. If it's longer than a sentence and contains no punctuation, I won't even bother trying to get through it most of the time. |

I know I can have typos from time to time as we all can. But putting text speak in a post or email comes off as pure lazy to me. Hell...even when I text I don't use text speak. It just doesn't look natural to me. |

I get trolled by grammar nazis about my spelling and punctuation quite a lot, so fine, I'm trolling the trolls by refusing to run a spellchecker or using Oxford commas. I tell them that if it annoys them then I think that says more about them than it does about me.

I think its fairly important, I'm Generaly conscious of this and will strive for quality work, but other times
I'm tired and miss things. I say qualify but thats in the eye's of the beholder as many people may write for a living or it may be a big part of there every day lives. Myself I do all my postings off of my phone which is my first smart phone and is still new to me. other factors that may play into it may be eye sight as the writing can get quite small on the phone also years of boxing and 23 years of running a chainsaw professionly has sure taken its toll on my hands. This can make it very hard to hit the touch screen acutely due to nerve damage . I also use predictive text and sometimes that can screw you. I could go on, there's certainly many variables for me, I have done more writing in the last couple of weeks than a have in 27 years, thats a fact. I didn't know all my hominids and punctuations when I finished grade 12 English, I was a terrible student, "majoring in the parking lot 101". To put things into perspective, its like giving a writer two chainsaws, wedges, belt, axe, safety equipment, first aid kit, hand held radio, gas and oil & drop them out of a helicopter on some Inlet on the west coast.....good luck with that one. I even here this all the time from guys that don't do it for a living say stuff like " well i've bin running saw all me life" and my answer to that is always "ya well I've bin livin a long time to, but it doesn't make me a porn star either. |

These are just general questions, since we all use writing to communicate here. no one is perfect, I have been typing for decades so I understand how certain errors will happen while typing,,,,but I will admit that if I notice a person consistently using poor grammar and spelling ,, it turns me off of reading their posts |

When I'm in the forums on my cell, I sometimes take the easy way out and let my I just come out as an i.
I also spell boys, boyz cause I made the typo once and thought it was funny. I often say cause instead of because a lot, so type it like I say it. I sometimes say fave instead of favorite, because it's just a bad habit I guess. I'm a bit sloppy with typos sometimes and will correct them within the given edit hour if I notice them. I extend about the same amount of leeway I seem to expect people to extend to my sometimes hurried posts and bad habits. I write a lot of formal proposals and business correspondence where I would never allow myself that kind of mistakes or slang. I think when posting on Mingle or writing to my friends here, ignoring a little of the formality I use in business makes me feel a bit more laid back and personal. |

I think it is. The main point of communication here is through writing and I personally make an effort in my own. I don't expect everyone to do the same, and I accept we all make mistakes and forget grammar rules here and there, but it is only the lack of true effort that annoys me.
1337 speak or text speak in forums, on paper or in chat rooms makes me want to throw an old fashioned typewriter at the person. |

I don't understand half of the text speak, so I do find that annoying. Many times though, I'll use annalog spellcheck.
A year ago, I didn't mind mispelled emails, until I started messaging with a new lady. When we met for the first time, (and the last) I found out she was an alcoholic, and the only times she'd mail me was when she was drunk. |

I have made spelling mistakes here before and been attacked by the Grammar nazi's. It doesn't bother me because if someone gets annoyed at something so minor then I wonder how they would react to something really important.A person who expects you to be perfect is trouble down the road for sure!

In your writing, none of that is distracting enough to make it hard to read what you're trying to say. I'm in no way saying people should be perfect. I just think it makes sense to try to write well enough for other people to read easily. |
