If someone purposefully misspells words, I'll skip over much of what they write.

I think it is. The main point of communication here is through writing and I personally make an effort in my own. I don't expect everyone to do the same, and I accept we all make mistakes and forget grammar rules here and there, but it is only the lack of true effort that annoys me.

1337 speak or text speak in forums, on paper or in chat rooms makes me want to throw an old fashioned typewriter at the person.
I'll make a point of trying to stop my run on sentences in future...but sometimes they run faster than me and I can't catch up with them, like when you're busy at work and the phone is ringing but you want to finish a post and hit send before you pick up the line, and still no one is answering the phone, so you know you have to pick it up eventually...so the easiest thing to do is forget about punctuation and sentence structure, because then you have to take time with caps and periods, which is not so hard on the laptop but takes extra steps on the cell phone...know what I mean?

But I'll try because I don't want to be hit with a typewriter. noway

I think its fairly important, I'm Generaly conscious of this and will strive for quality work, but other times
I'm tired and miss things.
I say qualify but thats in the eye's of the beholder as many people may write for a living or it may be a big part of there every day lives.
Myself I do all my postings off of my phone which is my first smart phone and is still new to me.
other factors that may play into it may be eye sight as the writing can get quite small on the phone also
years of boxing and 23 years of running a chainsaw professionly has sure taken its toll on my hands.
This can make it very hard to hit the touch screen acutely due to nerve damage .
I also use predictive text and sometimes that can screw you.
I could go on, there's certainly many variables for me, I have done more writing in the last couple of
weeks than a have in 27 years, thats a fact.
I didn't know all my hominids and punctuations when I finished grade 12 English, I was a terrible
student, "majoring in the parking lot 101".

To put things into perspective, its like giving a writer two chainsaws, wedges, belt, axe, safety equipment, first aid kit, hand held radio, gas and oil & drop them out of a helicopter on some Inlet on
the west coast.....good luck with that one.

I even here this all the time from guys that don't do it for a living say stuff like " well i've bin running saw
all me life" and my answer to that is always "ya well I've bin livin a long time to, but it doesn't make
me a porn star either.

I use my cell phone, too, and that's not an excuse.

Writing and dropping people out of a helicopter don't compare at all.

Not sure what the porn star reference is about at the end.

I use a screen reader and I am not in the habit of looking at text, so as long as it sounds right to me I don't really notice spelling mistakes and there are words that I forget how to spell because I'm not used to seeing them on the page. I run a spellchecker when I'm doing a piece of academic writing but I don't bother with that if it's just the internet.

Text speak does annoy me a bit sometimes but I don't mind it too much if I can understand what they are trying to say. A lot of the standard text speak acronyms are still meaningless to me though and I just try to make sense of them from the context.

There was a comedian talking about this on TV the other week and she was saying that some older people think that lol means "lots of love". "So sorry to hear about your divorce lol".

On a site like this, where writing is how we communicate, do you think someone's writing style is important? Do misspelled words and text speak bother you? Are grammar and punctuation important to you?

Disclaimer: This is not geared toward anyone or any threads. These are just general questions, since we all use writing to communicate here.

I can understand a few mistakes or typos, everyone has them. I have to reread my messages for spelling (I give up on grammar). Text speak is hard to understand and I leave them to their own world (in other words, I don't pay much attention to those posts with a lot of slang and text speak in them).

For the most part, I am quite fluent in typonese. I do, however, find a lot of errors distracting.

And text speak just annoys me. Not the lol's or smily faces but complete sentences that leave me wishing I could buy a vowel are just painful. I don't tend to stick with those conversations.

And if punctuation is used correctly, it does help tremendously in reading / hearing how a person comes across and not misinterpret their content or the 'voice' that they may be speaking in or 'talkin' at yu' as we are not face to face in which all is rather clear. Nearly all the native speakers of English/ Americanese went to a school and supposedly learned about proper punctuation, so use it. It clarifies what you trying to communicate and how.

Think of it as (rather forcibly) putting punctuation in someone's head.
