WASHINGTON (AP) — Has the nation lived down its history of racism and should the law become colorblind?

Addressing two pivotal legal issues, one on affirmative action and a second on voting rights, a divided Supreme Court is poised to answer those questions.

In one case, the issue is whether race preferences in university admissions undermine equal opportunity more than they promote the benefits of racial diversity. Just this past week, justices signaled their interest in scrutinizing affirmative action very intensely, expanding their review as well to a Michigan law passed by voters that bars "preferential treatment" to students based on race. Separately in a second case, the court must decide whether race relations — in the South, particularly — have improved to the point that federal laws protecting minority voting rights are no longer warranted.

He'll probably address this after his next vacation by saying the supreme court has acted....stupidly!

There is a very different Environment in the Southern States than when the Civil Rights Act on Voting passed.

The Klan is mostly made up of Washed Out Losers that's mostly too busy killing each other and using Meth, Coke, Ice, and committing Violent Felonies to bother any other group in Mass. They are still a threat mind you; just not organized.

Minorities are more often voted to the Various Offices that have Oversight of the Vote, and Minorities are Poll Watchers and filling out the Voter Forms for Voting; and finding Cases of Voter Suppression is getting much harder, unless you stoop to the insane stories that even Minority Groups have a hard time Not to Laugh Off.

soon as they can disprove the very real racisl discrepancies in the public education, and do away with privileges based upon school attended or family/alumni networks or for extracurricular participation,, and other things that are disproportionately available to the majority race and not to minorities,,,,,,,

how would I go about doing that on a dating forum, exactly?

lets just say monmey talks , and minorities still are not the ones holding the wealth in t his country

they are still the majority attending high poverty schools (not because of their 'merit' obviously, but because of financial status)
which are less likely to have the impressive extracurricular activities colleges look at,,,,

due to persistent racist IDEOLOGY (mindset), minorities are also more likely to have disciplinary records which may cause them to have harder time impressing colleges

many of those high poverty schools dont even have the books that provide an up to date education for those students enrolled, also giving them an automatic CRUTCH behind other students

,,the list goes on,, there are plenty of things that happen PRIOR to collge as a result of

past segregation/classism/discrimination/poverty,,

which indiscriminately and negatively affect minorities which warrants some small aknowledgement to truly give a level playing field to students who will and can have a successful college career because they are bright and capable, but they didnt have the privileged circumstances of their counterparts who may or may not be as bright, but who had better 'merit' on paper because of their school name, parents names, references,,,etc,,,

We are now in the year 2013, not the year 1973.
So, you do have to prove your claims of current racism, instead of referring to racism of yesteryear.

By the way, Americans who promote school vouchers are doing so in order for poor minority kids to have a chance to attend better schools. Guess who is preventing poor minority kids from receiving school vouchers?

If you want to improve the Local Schools, you'd have to get the State & Federal Government out of them and return the control back to the Local Community; it's one of the reasons that Private Schools outpace Public Schools, even the ones with a smaller budgets, in every field.

private schools do better because of MONEY

again, something thats not affordable to most impoverished families

so, the answer is to make PUBLIC (affordable) schools better equipped for all students

there are plenty of grade a public schoools out there, so just pointing to government involvement is not accurate

what makes the difference in the places where public schools excel and the places where they dont?

money, environment, and in my opinion, standards that dont consider childrens different learning styles (I think public schools should have more of a montessouri model than a strict grade assessment)

when we start addressing those realities, we start to truly see 'equal' educational opportunities for all of our children,,,

If Money made Schools better, than Every Public School should be doing Better; The Spending for Schools by State & Federal Government has been Increasing at Double/Triple the Rate of Inflation.

Most Private Schools don't even have the Third the Budget per Child of the Public School; yet they provide a better Education.

The one thing that Public Schools Excels at, far better than any Private School; Excuses for the Poor Education they Provide.

that wasnt my point exactly

my point is that parents of private school students PAY HEFTILY for that education, much mre than the mere property taxes that public school parents do

in the private/public schools where the parents are investing more,, the students are doing better

and in ares where the property taxes are higher, you will find the education in those PUBLIC Schools at a higher level than where property taxes are lower (ie, impoverished communities)

my point is not blame, there is too much 'responsibility' to go around to waste time with 'blame'

taxpayers are responsible for what they contribute or dont contribute, for the officials they elect and the teachers they accept

parents are responsible for the encouragement or support they give to the students

teachers are responsible for the encouragement or support they give to the students

and students are responsible for the effort they put into their education

,,,the failure is not a conservative or liberal one, its an american one,,,

I think that your argument is an empty one. Maybe 15 or 20 yrs ago this might have been true somewhere. But not today.

Race relations have improve greatly in just two generations. We went from Jim Crow Laws to a president that was mixed. The South, itself, is not as races as people claim. After all, South Carolina was the first state to elect and black American. Joseph Hayne Rainey, to the House of Representatives back in 1870. Now the southern Democrats were against Blacks having right but Democrats in general from the start of the country passed laws oppressing the black. Plus the KKK was primary democrats that lynched any black that was a Republican.

True while there still may be racism in this country, but there is none strong enough to stop anyone from living their life. Most of America has a close friend that is of another race; I think its runs up to about 80% of the young people. Racial mixing is also going up. Still in other parts of the world they have race riots even in countries like France and Russia.

Although Government is still the biggest problem when it comes to race. Some in Politics want to keep race alive so they can keep their jobs and money coming in. Take public schools, often the place of that promotes segregation. Students have to attend public schools in the district they live and if the district is primary poor and mostly black, then the school will be primary black and poorly funded.
