So, as of the first of this year, Hawaii has banned plastic bags completely at grocery stores. I understand the logic and all but the stores aren't even offering paper bags as an alternative. They make you buy these recyclable bags you reuse which I can understand as well to a point, but paper bags were not outlawed so I don't know why they don't offer them. They did before.

This wasn't something voted on either, just something shoved down our throats. What are your thoughts on this?

They did this in North Carolina. At least at the Outer Banks, not sure about the rest of the state. However, they had paper bags. I was fine with the reasoning and no plastic bags.

where I'm from.. most stores still offer plastic bags but there is a fee for each one.. however they also offer the 'recycled' reusable bags for under a $1 as well and typically last a year or more.. I'm assuming not enough people are recycling in their daily lives so industry & govts are leaning more towards reusable than adding more garbage to our landfills.. which makes a WHOLE lotta sense in my opinion.. soon though there will be no plastic bags available at all.. they don't offer paper either.. for similar reasons (preservation of trees)

I don't mind bringing my own.. with grandkids on the way.. I'm okay doing anything I can, to preserve a lil of their habitat after I'm gone..

Plastic bags suck. They don't hold as much stuff. They don't hold things straight after you pack them. And kids at grocery stores don't know chit about how to pack a bag.

We haven't banned plastic bags here but most stores will charge you to buy them. I have recycle bags with me all the time and they fold up small enough to sit on a key chain. I suspect eventually; all plastic bags will stop being sold here with the exception of garbage bags and even those don't get much use as we have the garbage and recycling bins now. Its just a way to cut down on plastic in the landfills so I am going with the flow.

Plastic bags kill approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals each year. Sea turtles often mistake floating plastic bags for their favorite food, jellyfish, and the consequences of ingesting plastic can be fatal.

Very good reason for them to be banned in areas where this could easily happen.

people can bring plastic bags with them from ANYwhere, to where it could easily happen so I agree with eliminating them.. kinda eliminates some of the consequences too I'd think..

all disposable containers should be banned because most humans don't have the sense to not destroy the very environment they NEED to survive

and plastic is derived from oil...take away that use then maybe the oil shortage would not be so serious

and maybe the world will last a few more centuries if humankind doesnt nuke it and destroy it

and most humans say animals are dumb maybe we should take a closer look and look in the mirror

could you show me he law that banned paper bags --- i just thought it was cause oil bags were cheaper

although banning paper bags would save trees which produce oxygen which we need to survive

using the reusable bags is just a matter of a change in habits -- you do realize those bags (the plastic & paper ones) are not free
they add it to the price of the products you buy

but hey what do i know

I am curious as to why you would see this as a bad thing. I remember how many people got pissed off here in Canada when they brought in the metric system but turns out it was a good thing. So, perhaps as some posters say getting rid of the plastic bags will help the marine life.
