Can't, is mine, if a 90 page full report from my psychiatrist and a 135 page report of my psychology testing (among other things) isn't enough, well then, what the hell is..

Best way to purge the slacker is cut their unemployment extensions.
If, they have been on for more than a year, cut 'em off.

Ya know, I'd LOVE to hear what you all think of Social Security benefits. I'm on social security, will be for the rest of my life and I'm only 31 years old. I'm mentally disabled, and have a severe case of social anxiety, I can't walk into a Wal-Mart without a serious panic attack. Want ME to do work and volunteer with others? I don't think so, it'd be a bad situation. Not mentioning the other 3 serious illnesses I have. Always amazes me at the people working, props, if I could work I WOULD, I actually miss working, but there's not a damn thing I can do about it. The last 2 jobs I had, fired. WHY? Medications and they found out about my illnesses, that's out of my hands. Not because I didn't work hard enough, I busted my a$$ everyday. Now it's just to the point of it's worse enough, and will GET worse over time. It's a train ride that will never stop. It's in the bloodlines, it's hereditary in my family and I just happened to be next in line to get it all. If you call my grandma spending the last 20 years of her life in a mental institution BS, I feel sorry for ya. Do I receive benefits? Of course, but I'm getting LESS than a 40 hour work week at min. wage.

This issue has been brought up many times. Social security and welfare are different. People who can't work because of a disability is a different situation then welfare.

Oh I know it's not, but the OP of this discussion said "and social security, we're not even going there" wtf?

And like I said assistance should come to those in TRUE NEED! There are jobs that don't require a lot of personal interaction. You have yet to find one. At least you tried to work and probably still try. THAT IS RESPECTABLE. At least you have pride in yourself. BUT NOW ANDY WILL GET DRACONIAN HERE!

In my past experience I have come across a wide cross section of people. Between people who treat mental disorders and interacting with people with disorders there are two classes of mentally handicapped, those who admit they have a problem such as yourself, and those who refuse to admit they have a problem. Take Bi-Polar disorder. I know a few people who have it. Only TWO OF THE HUNDRED OR SO BI_POLAR PEOPLE I MET NOT ONLY ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM THEY ARE ON MEDS THEY HATE AND ARE COUNCILED REGULARLY TO HELP THEM GRAPPLE WITH THE ISSUE AND WEAN THEMSELVES OFF OF THE DRUGS THAT STABILIZE THEM GRADUALLY. The rest REFUSE to admit they have a problem and dealing with them is a total rolly-coaster ride! The streets are full of Street Lurkers all who are not only messed up in their heads but they are HARD CORE DRUG ADDICTS! The only help they want is money to fed their habits. THEY JUST DON'T CARE AND LIBERALS WANT TO FORCE US TO CARE ABOUT AND FOR THEM.

Social Security is a whole different ball of wax to welfare. I know a few people with a condition called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Most of them have jobs. Most of them grapple with a condition that is trying them to no end but they work and have lives. Then there are those who ride that like an excuse for easy money. Frankly we should only help those who want it, deserve it, and work for and towards it. Not give money for alcoholics, drug addicts, and lazy people can sit back and enjoy their high while the rest of us break our backs to support them vicariously through our liberal government.

What makes some street lurking bum more worthy for help and aid then a mother of one struggling to pay her bills and feed her child? What makes some lazy fat bytch who has three kids and complains she needs to "raise her babies" and more deserving than a man who is working his *** off and he just can't make enough to keep up with the bills? FAT BYTCH NEEDS TO GET OFF OF HER LAZY FAT AZ AND GET A JOB!

I think people are WAY TOO EAGER TO GET ASSISTANCE WHEN THEY DON'T NEED IT OR DESERVE IT!

And just so it is not unsaid, Do you think Social Security will be there for me when I retire? HELL NO! IT IS FLOUNDERING AND GOING DOWN! IT WAS DESIGNED AS A LEGAL PONZI SCHEME AND NOE LIKE ALL PONZI SCHEMES IT IS RUNNING ITS COURSE TO A CONCLUSION WE KNOW IS COMING!

offtopic But I digress once more. This argument is about Welfare. The Social Security issue does parallel it somewhat but the two really are not the same. One is an issue of retirement, but Welfare is a matter of public assistance! AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT DESERVE ASSISTANCE LIKE ILLEGAL ALIENS, MOTHERS WHO REFUSE TO WORK, DRUG ADDICTS AND ALCOHOLICS, and CAREER CRIMINALS!offtopic

From what I know of the OP I believe he is referring to the retirement part of that. Where people should be saving their own and not have a government run thing and the government is always "borrowing" from there and such. I mean Why can't I just use the money I pay to SS to go to personal retirement? At least then if I die my family or whoever can still get my money. It's not just gone forever.

To get up the ladder, one must step onto the very first rung.

If, what you used to do isn't available, go somewhere else. That's what a driven, independent person would do.

A slacker will just sit until the rug is pulled out.

Street survival tip #1;
If you take all the plastic ID off the shopping cart, the cops can't tell who it belonged to.

you are missing my point, do you think most who are unemployed havent stepped onto that 'first rung', over and over?..lol

do you realize it takes money and 'credit' and history in a spot to relocate there?

a person without a family/children will always ASSUME that those with can just always pick up and 'go ' where the opportunity is available

and so the wealthiest and the employers will continue to control the worker bees,,, while turning them on each other,,,,

brilliant really, and probably where we are headed,, classism will be the new LEGAL discrimination,,,

Social Security is NOT welfare!!!

The welfare system needs to be revamped.

It SHOULD be used to help the disadvantaged take a step up, not provide a free handout to anyone. Those collecting fall into two categories...

1. Those who use the system to improve their lives and become productive members of society.

2. Those who abuse the system and live high off the hog for eternity on taxpayer dollars while the rest of us struggle to work.

Unfortunately, the latter group knows the faults and how to work the system to their advantage. Little can be done to alleviate the situation thanks to the newfound entitlement mentality that's spreading like wildfire in the midst of the welfare culture. Why work when the government will provide twice as much in benefits as you could make busting your a$$ all week? It's no wonder they get on welfare and don't want to get off. If you do try to make an effort, you lose more benefits than you make! What's wrong with this picture? Those who do nothing profit more than those who don't! Insanity!

2 changes that might help...

1. Benefits need to be temporary...long enough to find a job, or go to school to get skills so you CAN find a job...not lifelong. If you can't get your $hit together after X amount of time, chances are you never will and we're not going to condone that behavior by supporting you for the rest of your natural born life!

2. Drug testing should be done to receive benefits. Hey, if we have to drug test so we can work and get a paycheck, why shouldn't they have to test so they can get their free money? That rule alone would cut the rolls tremendously and most of them would be the category 2 folks, not the people that are getting some much needed help.

Able people (mind and body) SHOULD be working to support themselves and their families, period. The system we have in place right now rewards the apathetic and punishes those who make an honest effort to overcome difficult circumstances. Sad really...

I speak from experience. I am blessed to have gained a perspective from both sides of the coin so maybe that's why my words seem wise to you. I try to state things as clearly and concisely as possible when I venture to give my opinion on things, although I try to keep that to a minimum since I tend to be long-winded. I completely agree people on Welfare assistance should be drug/alcohol tested. I've seen with my own eyes people that take advantage of the system.

My social security case isn't based on taking advantage of the system. I know they are two different things, and you mentioned (Andy did) that Bi-polar is one of them he knows about and people cope, etc, etc. Since I may as well just blurt everything out, since I have nothing to lose now, I have 2 types of bi-polar, 2 types of schizophrenia, severe social anxiety (I'm on the max legal limit for Klonopin), and borderline personality disorder. I know social security system is messed up. Yes, I see my doctor every month. Know who decided I should try to get disability? My doctor. And that "everyone gets denied the first time" saying is not true, mine took 4 months on the first try and everything else followed. My case is bad enough they say I shouldn't work in the public. Hell, just yesterday we had child support court to get the payments modified because I'm getting way less money now than I was when I was working a year and a half ago. I wasn't even in the courthouse 10 minutes and had a panic attack. I showed the guards my papers and they immediately took me and my daughter's mother into a private room with a door and shut it. The judge took out case first, and cleared out the courtroom so I would be comfortable. That's just a glimpse of my everyday life. I have many things I can't do, hence why I'll probably be single the rest of my life, who the hell wants to put up with it? Nobody. Do I still have a drivers license? Yup, for now, but they said in 10 years or less I'll most likely lose it, and no, I don't own a car.
