Old West Stables · 11450 Park Road 5 · Canyon, Texas 79015 · 806-488-2180

Watch for this sign after
entering the canyon.
Horses and horse back riding have been a part of Palo Duro Canyon's history since the days of the Apaches, Kiowas, Comanches, and Cheyennes. Tho' you shouldn't expect your ride to be as daring as some of theirs undoubtedly were, we expect that you'll want to make your own horse back riding history when you visit Palo Duro Canyon and the Old West Stables.

Our rental horses are tame and well kept and our horse back riding guides are not just experienced, they're real honest to goodness COWBOYS! You'll never find a more beautiful setting as you ride the canyon floor through the same hills and ravines as such famous individuals as Colonel Ranald MacKenzie of the U.S. Cavalry and Colonel Charles Goodnight, Palo Duro Canyon's first permanent white settler.

Our season begins each year on the first Saturday in March and ends on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving. We are closed through the winter months.

The ranch just before entering the park offers jeep tours also. I toured Elkings Ranch for a Cowboy breakfast some years ago (dutch oven cooking with a cowboy seranade!)

I vote on the jeep tours, if they are open..horses are fun..but you'd see very little of the canyon on them.

They carry about six or eight people! Actually they are four wheel drive Suburbans with the roof cut off and dressed up to look like cows!laugh

It was a lot of fun and a great way to learn about the history, flora, and fauna of the canyon!

I just called Elkings Ranch. Sadly, the six inches of rain they had recently washed out too many of the jeep trails for tours! They are bringing in a dozer tomorrow to do repairs. The lady said to call back on thursday to see how the repairs were going. They might be back in operation by Saturday. They are the ONLY jeep tour operator in the area.

I think there are 10 of us total and the cabins sleep 8 total. You'd better bring it along...

I have a blow up cot I'll bring...and we might want to each bring a blanket..except for Glenda..and I'll bring her one. I know the cabins have linens furnished..but have y'all ever known a motel or ANY PLACE that has enough covers...and I'm taking my pillow....it's a security thinglaugh

I'll get with Don as we get closer to the weekend. We'll need tortillas for our breakfast tacos with ingredients like sour cream and cheese. The meat is covered. We'll need buns and condiments for our burgers and whatever we want to go with our steaks and burgers. Baked potatoes would probably be best since we can cook them in the microwaves and they use the same toppings as the breakfast tacos.

Right now the menu is looking like (subject to change)

Friday afternoon - snacks
Friday night - we cook steaks
Saturday morning - breakfast tacos
Saturday lunch - burgers
Saturday afternoon - snacks
Saturday night - Big Texan Steak Ranch
Sunday morning - Breakfast tacos

The only meal outside the park is the Steak Ranch.

Breakfast tacos
I got eggs today.
We can use leftover dinner meat if available. We can also use leftover potatoes, etc.
We still need:
Tortillas
Sour Cream
Shredded cheese
Fruit (It goes with your taco, not in it!)

Paper Plates: I have a bunch. I hope to remember to bring them.

Burger lunch

Don brings burgers and maybe dogs.
We need:
Buns
Mustard (remember Texans eat Mustard!)
Burger "stuff" (we could put Miri's salad on there!)
Same 'ol shredded cheese.
Relish or picante sauce
Sides (potato chips?)

Steak dinner

Need input from Don on this one
Newest head count is ten people
Charcoal
Firewood

Do you need to be picked up? I think Don will be in Amarillo on Thursday night, or Glenda and I can pick you up when we go to the store..that'll save you some gas driving back and forth. I'll bring the Possum, fudge, chips, sour cream, guacamole, and MIRCLE WHIP!!!. And of course my diet Dr. Pepper. My cot and some extra bedding.
