there is a thin line between 'having an opinion' and being disruptive or insubordinate

I think it's quite a broad line myself. A person without an opinion is nothing but a droid. It's how you express your opinion that counts. Contrary to popular belief, it's quite possible to have a civil disagreement where people actually listen to the opposing point of view with respect. Students won't do this, though, unless it's modeled (taught to them) by the teacher.

True education is a two-way street, not stuffing predetermined biases into unresisting minds.

I would agree if teachers had a more one on one arrangement with their students. I Think it becomes more implausible when one persno is dealing with thirty to fourty individuals at a time, to encourage 'civil disagreement' in such a casual manner.

It may be productive if it has conditions. Such as a set period for questions and what types of questions will be covered,,,etc,,,

but just telling fourty people that are all trying to LEARN something that at any time one or two or all fourty may begin to engage in a 'discusion' of what is being taught would be unfair to those who are there to learn and have to learn a curriculum that is set in a certain time frame.

And here I thought that debating issues, forming an opinion, and learning to act on those decisions, was education.....silly me!

in a structured classroom they are educational, but they also have a 'place' and 'time' so as not to disrupt the actual LEARNING CURRICULUM

school is not really a place to hang out and have discussions with your teacher, they make pretty complex learning plans and are on a specific schedule of what they need to teach,,,time is not an endless commodity for them to accomplish those goals....

school is also the place where we prepare for the world, and adults dont even always have the option to DISCUSS Everything at all timea and in all places,,,

He teacher brought up the subject of Romney bullying someone. When the student also brought up the fact that Obama said he was somewhat of a bully the teacher then threatened the student he could be arrested for speaking ill of the president? Where does she get her information from? And when is it ok to lie to students?
It's ok for the teacher to speak ill of Romney? The whole thing is rediculous and I hope the teacher loses her job.

So the teacher can threaten the student with arrest for saying something about Obama he has in his book?
The teacher told him he could be arrested for "speaking ill about the president"
Show me where that's against the law!!
If the teacher has. I clue of the laws she shouldn't threaten a student with what she thinks is the law.
What a fine example this woman is to our students.
Should she not be teaching the students that it's not nice to speak ill of anyone?
Way to lead by example teacher. Like I said before she should lose her job.

Unless the class is specific to politics, the teacher has no business infusing his/her politics into the class room. Even if the class is about politics, the teacher should present only a neutral stance on modern politics.

no, a teacher nor anyone but a police officer can threaten to 'arrest' anyone,, first of all

people can threaten to HAVE someone arrested, I didnt hear that on the video

if not always arrest, certainly investigation can be the result of expressing ill will towards a president

"In 2005, a teacher instructed her senior civics and economics class to take photographs to illustrate the rights contained in the United States Bill of Rights. One student "had taken a photo of George Bush out of a magazine and tacked the picture to a wall with a red thumb tack through his head. Then he made a thumb's-down sign with his own hand next to the President's picture, and he had a photo taken of that, and he pasted it on a poster." A Wal-Mart photo department employee reported it to police, and the Secret Service investigated."

I agree. I dont think this style of teaching is progressive or should be encouraged.

Every police arrest is a "citizens" arrest as that is an action they are empowered with by the citizenry. A jury, formed by 12 peers of the citizenry, is then the power to either convict or relieve that indictment. A judge only has the power to rule on law and impose punishment after hearing recommendations from any concerned.

We ALL have the power to "arrest" an individual for what we perceive as a crime, but just like the police, you had best be able to make your case or you are libal for a wrongful arrest suit!

Some might argue a legitimate case of harrassment by threat.

The fact that a teacher is an authorative figure would make that an easy case! Intimidation would be the crowning moment in that hearing!

any citizen can arrest any other citizen for breaking the law... it is called a citizens arrest, and is still a fully functioning law

Anyone who doesn't see this as an authoritative threat, or harrassment by threat, to this child, whether he was right or wrong to question the issue, is sadly mistaken.

Surprised willing hasn't voiced on this! State militias act under the constitution, and this authority (and while many argue the Nat Guard is "state militia" they would be wrong!).

Most can recite those laws by the letter as their validity is always threatened!

NDAA and precrime/thought crime must be ok in your book too then, huh?

You already said you agreed with the violation of 1st amendment rights, denying freedom of assembly, a redress of grievences.

No leader who wishes to violate my rights, is worth my effort to defend, but I will ALWAYS stand for my country, its patriots, and its constitution. The UCMJ even states a right to violate an order felt to be unjust by definition of your sworn oath!

I would ask...... how much of OUR Constitution are you willing to allow flushed down the toilet at the whim of corrupt politicians and your precious Obozo at the head of them?
