I've only heard of boys doing this, but I'm curious to know, also.

What possesses a child to stick a Cheerio or bean up their nose? Because it's there! Kids do not sit there and analyze what would happen if they stuck the Cheerio up the nose, they wonder if it is possible, then try it out. They learn hands on. |

Good question, I think they do it because they can do. What i wonder is why I still do it!

lol its there way of figuring out their bodies. They will stick things up their nose, ears, and even eat things just to see if they can. As children develop their bodies are changing and for them that is an ever curious thing. i had a kid in one of my pre-k class eat a crayon and was fascinated when he had colorful poop! However he did figure out that it wasn't worth eating the crayon to see that again...he had a tummy ache for a little bit :)

As a social work infestigatior we found that kids putting things in various orifices is not unusual. Even orifices that you would commonly think would cause them pain. Beczuse children often put things int heir mouth first it is not always as difficult as it might sound.
But it really becomes a problem when they put things in their urethra, vagina, or bowels because then often it doesn't just slip back out and can cause major infections. Crayons are a major issue because they do not readily show up opn xray) and should be suspect if any child has a chronic bowel or bladder infection or especially if a female child seems to have discharge. Something hard to identify if a child is potty trained since the discharge tends to dry up in the hamper. Children that suddenly start bed wetting especially if they have siblings that are seen being treated for constipation or even useing tampax can be mimicked so you want to keep such procedures un observed. Not always easy when you have a family shareing a single bathroom. Many families are hysterical and false acusations of child sexual abuse are often brought into question when in fact they are not ALWAYS what has happened but because the child is "grilled" by often untrained or zealous investigators the child will refuse to answer or agree to say whatever seems to please the person doing the questioning. An excellent reason to take your child to a well qualified pediatrician or a Pediatric Emergency room where they also have child size equipment to make such extractions and procedures less tramatizeing. Believe it or not this is not just problem with todders and younger children but sometimes with tweens or teens that are experimenting with sex or showing off and do something under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Toxic Schock Syndrom is not kust limited to useing menstrul products. And as incredible as it sounds teens will "borrow" from their parents not so secret stash or share sex toys among friends. |

Sometimes it does just happen by accident. I had to do a tweezer extraction on my 2year old to look for a macaroni noodle - it disappeared by accident, right before my very eyes!
Others, are science experiments. Those ones should be earmarked early for engineering. |

Te he, I miss those days. I used to have to shower my child 3 times a day after each meal. Everything went straight in her hair and squished and thrown everywhere. Was crazy, but adorable at the same time.
