Why does my container of butane lighter fuel say "Do not refuel in kitchen near sink"?  Clearly there's something in it that doesn't mesh well with steel or tap water. |

Why does my container of butane lighter fuel say "Do not refuel in kitchen near sink"? Clearly there's something in it that doesn't mesh well with steel or tap water. So, the water in my kitchen is different than in the rest of the house? Or the kitchen sink is made out of some sort of 'magical' steel that's different from a car or a bridge or a spaceship?

Why does my container of butane lighter fuel say "Do not refuel in kitchen near sink"? ..When liquefied butane comes in contact with water it can boil, froth and vaporize quickly; and you're never supposed to use water to put out a liquid butane fire.. So.. Yup. IE. It means sink, period. |

Why does my container of butane lighter fuel say "Do not refuel in kitchen near sink"? ..When liquefied butane comes in contact with water it can boil, froth and vaporize quickly; and you're never supposed to use water to put out a liquid butane fire.. So.. Yup. IE. It means sink, period. Considering that it's made by Ronson/Zippo I'd think if they meant sinks (or water) in general they would have said that. It's not like it was made in some third world country that doesn't speak English or has tons of lawyers. As far as not using water to put out a butane fire, this came straight from it's MSD Sheet..... "EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Dry Chemical (B-C), water.". I also looked in the Emergency Response Guidebook and it says to use Dry Chemical or CO2 for small fires and WATER spray or fog for large fires. Before anybody asks, yes, I've already written the company and asked why it says that. They never responded.
