The rich pay a substantial share of taxes across the developed world, and this share has risen in recent decades. According to the OECD, a think-tank, the top 10% of earners contribute about a third of total tax revenues—28% in France, 31% in Germany and 42% in Italy. Rich Britons pay about 39% of total taxes while America’s wealthiest households contribute a larger share to government than in any other OECD country, at 45%. Looking just at income tax, the share paid by the top 1% of earners in America rose from 28% in 1988 to 40% in 2006, in Britain it rose from 21% in 1999 to 28% this year.

Not saying they shouldn't pay taxes just trying to point out they already pay a lot. People are under this misconception that rich people don't pay because there are people like Warren Buffet. Most rich people are not like that.

Its more about not spending so much. Spending jumped a lot the past 15 years or so. We were fine before that so I don't see why we had to spend so much more. The government should have to be like regular people. If you can't afford it stop spending. Having less government regulation would have less government employees and lower tax burden. Flat tax would do this too because they could lose the IRS for the most part.

Social security... we need to figure that out too. It was never that economical and with people living longer and longer (and being sickly while doing it) is really costing us a lot of money.

you do realize that cutting government employees would be like cutbacks on teachers, or doctors

and would create a serious OVERLOAD of work for those left?

and can you be more specific about how spending 'jumped'?

in the past ten years alone, we have jumped from a nation of roughly 240,000,000 to 307,000,000 by census estimates

thats a growth rate of nearly 30percent over ten years

with that rate of growth, how do we budget for spending 'less' ?

if you have a household of five people and two more join, you would expect more spending,,,wouldnt you?

You do it by changing the tax codes.

You eliminate deductions and you make everyone start paying something.

You institute a national sales tax for all those that work in this country suck off the resources and send most of what they make back to Guatemala..

It's time to stop placating special interest groups and get the damn job done.

It's fning ridiculous..

You analogy isn't good as those new people do pay taxes. So if your revenue was x per person on average and your spending was y per person on average if you kept your spending per person the same you wouldn't be out more money.

Taxing the wealthy will not help, in fact, it will hurt the economy....

The rich stimulate the economy when they place their money in banks by providing investments means to consumers in the form of mortgages, new business start up capital, and short term credit, ie credit cards...
Stocks...If the wealthy are forced to sell shares in order to pay tax debt, share prices will plummet because the wealthy investors provide "artificial" value to share prices...This would be catastrophic to private sector pension plans because they are primarily funded by share investment...ie increased share value..
The same holds true for the wealthy's real property assets and their cash...Selling off assets and spending cash to pay "debt" decreases value across the board...Think domino effect...Econ 101..Reverse the obvious and you have the correct answer...MONEY NOT SPENT IN THE ECONOMY KEEPS INFLATION IN CHECK...Money NOT spent people.....

Also our budget has gone up 2.5 times since the early 90s and is estimated to continue to rise over 3.5 times from the 90s in the next 2-4 years. So unless the population has increased that much we are over spending. They need to spend less and and pay off their debts.

 An annual holiday abroad!! If this statement were not so sad, it would be funny...An annual "holiday" abroad is a luxury, not a necessity, certainly not a vacation for the vast majority....

I can afford a car a decent place to live and quality food yes.....I don't need healthcare for myself and health care cost are out of control because of insurance companies, research to play god and prolong life.....besides even if I get something i won't take the pills, injections, or any other thing they expect me to do to live longer for whatever reason it is that they want people to live longer. Part of the problems of the Earth and issues we face today are because people live longer.

You can "get away" in your back yard...If "Americans" want to travel abroad, they will either have to be silver spoon babies, trust fund babies, hold a very high paying position, or rob a bank...America, I speak about the typical wage earning American....Abroad!! How pretentious....
