I honestly cannot believe anyone would be opposed to this. Its not the Queens English, but America kicked England's *** so why would we speak the Queens English? We speak American English, and English absolutely should be the official language. No one is saying you cant speak anything else, but all government documents and business should be English only. Private business can operate in whatever language they want.

Well..The people that actually did the a$$ kicking spoke the Kings English and you can see it in the documents I listed in my initial post.

If they felt it was important to make English the official language they would have put it in the Constitution.

Government documents and affairs should be written and conducted in English.

Vthepoet -- I agree with everything you said. English already is our national language, and people who want to fit in know they need to learn it. I don't see why we need a law.

invictus -- Not sure what you're thinking of as government documents. For instructions and forms that need to be filled out by millions of people, it seems like it would be easier to translate them into Spanish, say, than just not get the form filled out. Hiring a translator for individuals, or waiting weeks for them to find someone themselves, seems a lot more labor-intensive and inefficient to me.

Seakolony -- No one's talking about "every" language. One or two would be reasonable.

Jermanicus -- I think your "small minority" may not be so small. I think most people don't care much about this issue. It's common sense that if you plan to live in a country, it's a great help to speak the language. Making a law about it is just a waste of time.

Boredinaz -- The leftists are running this country? How did I miss that? And by the way, I thought that to a conservative, "leftists" were the people who made unnecessary, invasive laws.

Even a couple sends cost soaring.....one of the problems with Florida costs remains the amount of brochures/pamphlets they print in four different languages as opposed to one and making them translate the materials. The time it takes for workers to type and translate letters into another language.

English, Creole, and Spanish are the main ones for right now.

Take a second and think about the different departments and how many different pamphlets being printed in two to three other languages right now and the sheer cost of it.

What is the importance of a law declaring ONE language as a national language?

What kind of laws would grow out of such a declaration? How would they be enforced?

If American/English(AE) were a national language, would schools be held accountable for producing high-school graduates with a certain level of reading, writing, and speaking skills?

Would we consider text-speak a form of AE? Would rap be an acceptable form of the language - or country slang?

And what about 'dialects', fad phrases and the use of colloquialisms, contractions and OMG what about acronyms from netlingo to medical, from computer to government? Heck (now that's a word, isn't it?)the DOD even has a dictionary of acronyms and abbreviations.

Do you all feel confident that you could pass a government acronym test?

Haha, rock on, Redy.

Would the governments (fed and state) have to set up new departments to oversee and enforce all the new regulations?

So, srsly whad-up wid u awl, whachu be thinkn?

I think people are confusing what an official language is,, it doesnt require anyone to pass dialect tests. Every language, every country, has regional dialects... but the people still understand the Majority language., I can assure your of that as an african american who has become familiar with urban dialect but would still be perfectly capable of passing any english or reading comprehension test based in 'proper' english.

I think the only difference it makes is to motivate people to learn a specific language when they come to a new country so that they will be able to communicate more effectively and efficiently with the people there and to cut back on the costs of deciding how many other languages to accomodate in its federal and educational processes. It puts the responsibility on the person to adapt to the country (if they plan to stay and get an education or work)as opposed to the other way around, which I dont think is the least bit unreasonable.

Its much better to allow everyone to speak their own languages so we can go back to a society of tribalism where everyone lives in their little enclaves and goes back to hating and killing people that wronged their ancestors 300 years ago..

That's brilliant..

Untrue making English the National language doesn't make everyone speak and understand English but will make all paperwork transmitted in English and will make others have it translated into their language.

Don't know where you got the misinformation.

However, I will correct you. English is not officially our National Language. smokin

It is offensively discriminatory to have Gov. forms and phone service available to only two idiomas. There are over 300 different tongues spoken here and our Gov. chooses to cater specifically to Spanish.

In private enterprises, folks are and should be free to cater to whomever they choose.

Our Official National Language should be English.

The Gov. can have, on standby, folks who will translate, for a fee, any language presented.

That would create great jobs for private individuals who are bilingue.

Funny, except there is probably a fair amount of truth.

Were ALL one and we keep finding reasons to separate.

There wasn't a need to do so because the people coming here either already spoke it or learned it real quick.

This statement is pure racism.

The only reason our Gov. caters to the Spanish is due to Political positioning.

Recoquista and La Raza openly want to reconquer the US.

If we all want to be fair, lets go back to the only TRUE americans...
the natives.

We should all learn their respective languages according to the area we live in and what tribe lived there.

Our language is NOT the first language spoken here...we don't OWN america it belongs to everyone.

Get over yourselves!
