Question: "What does the Bible say about the prosperity gospel?"

Answer: In the prosperity gospel, also known as the “Word of Faith,” the believer is told to use God, whereas the truth of biblical Christianity is just the opposite—God uses the believer.

Word of Faith or prosperity theology sees the Holy Spirit as a power to be put to use for whatever the believer wills. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is a Person who enables the believer to do God's will.
The prosperity gospel movement closely resembles some of the destructive greed sects that infiltrated the early church.

Paul and the other apostles were not accommodating to or conciliatory with the false teachers who propagated such heresy. They identified them as dangerous false teachers and urged Christians to avoid them.

Paul warned Timothy about such men in 1 Timothy 6:5, 9-11. These men of “corrupt mind” supposed godliness was a means of gain and their desire for riches was a trap that brought them “into ruin and destruction” (v. 9).

The pursuit of wealth
is a dangerous path for Christians and one which God warns about: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (v. 10).

If riches were a reasonable goal for the godly,
Jesus would have pursued it. But He did not, preferring instead to have no place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20) and teaching His disciples to do the same. It should also be remembered that the only disciple concerned with wealth was Judas.

Paul said covetousness is idolatry (Ephesians 5:5) and instructed the Ephesians to avoid anyone who brought a message of immorality or covetousness (Ephesians 5:6-7).

Prosperity teaching prohibits God from working on His own, meaning that God is not Lord of all because He cannot work until we release Him to do so.

Faith, according to the Word of Faith doctrine,
is not submissive trust in God; faith is a formula by which we manipulate the spiritual laws that prosperity teachers believe govern the universe. As the name “Word of Faith” implies, this movement teaches that faith is a matter of what we say more than whom we trust or what truths we embrace and affirm in our hearts.

A favorite term in the Word of Faith movement is “positive confession.”

This refers to the teaching that words themselves have creative power.
What you say, Word of Faith teachers claim, determines everything that happens to you.
Your confessions, especially the favors you demand of God, must all be stated positively and without wavering.
Then God is required to answer (as though man could require anything of God!).

Thus,
God's ability to bless us supposedly hangs on our faith.

James 4:13-16 clearly contradicts this teaching:
“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

Far from speaking things into existence in the future, we do not even know what tomorrow will bring or even whether we will be alive.

Instead of stressing the importance of wealth, the Bible warns against pursuing it. Believers, especially leaders in the church (1 Timothy 3:3), are to be free from the love of money (Hebrews 13:5). The love of money leads to all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10).

Jesus warned,
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).

In sharp contrast to the Word of Faith emphasis on gaining money and possessions in this life,

Jesus said,
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19).
T
he irreconcilable contradictions between prosperity teaching and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is best summed up in the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:24,

“You cannot serve both God and money.”

There was nothing wrong with such movements as

the Word of Faith movement, for instance....what went wrong is

others came along and TWISTED the Word of Faith teaching....

Even the one who initiated the movement , wept when he saw what

others had done to the initial teaching of the TRUE meaning

of the Word of FAITH.

God would have us Prosper , even as our soul propereth.

But again, UNLESS one has the Holy Spirit INDWELLING him, the Word

of God can be TWISTED by some, to mean and say anything a

person wants The Word of God to mean and say.

And no, the Word of Faith does NOT teach that we manipulate God .

But again, there were those who came along later, and DID

twist the Word of Faith.

Again.....unless one is Indwelt by The Holy Spirit, God's Word can

be twisted to say anything man wants God's Word to say.

There is FAITH .....and then there is FOOLISHNESS being taught out there....

but this is nothing new.

I Agree CeriseRose...

However...

THANK GOD that God is NOT OPPOSED to Prosperity ( just

becaue some out there in the world "corrupt" the meaning of

God's Word regarding prosperity ).

Yes....God is opposed to the MISUSE

of prosperity.....or prosperity just for ONES OWN GAIN ONLY, for instance...

But again.....God is NOT opposed to prosperity.

And

God is NOT opposed to money.....

God did NOT say that money is the root of all evil...

God's Word says that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Big difference.

Again....God WOULD HAVE US TO PROSPER and be in good health,

even AS our soul prospers.

Says it right here in scripture :

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in

health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Amen.flowerforyou

But again....we will ALWAYS have those out there, who will TWIST the

MEANING of God's Word for thier own gain....

nothing new.

PS.... WHEN PEOPLE KNOW GOD IN THEIR HEARTS (THESE ARE

BELIEVERS... THOSE WHO ARE SAVED OR IN OTHER WORDS,BORN

AGAIN ),BELIEVERS WANT TO PLEASE AND OBEY GOD NOW...AND WILL NOT

TWIST GOD'S WORDS FOR THEIR OWN GAIN.

Point being..it is NOT God's People who TWIST scripture, but ONLY

those who do NOT YET know God in their hearts.

NOW....I am not talking about belivers who do not Fully know

all of God's Word yet .

But Since ALL Believers NOW have the INDWELLING by The Holy Spirit

WITHIN, ALLLL Believers are NOW ABLE to RECOGNIZE TRUTH FROM ERROR....

because ALL Believers are Lead and Guided and Taught Now by the

HOLY SPIRIT.....

thus ,ALL Believers WILL be ABLE to RECOGNIZE if and when

GOD'S WORD is being TWISTED!!!!!

And WILL eventually FLEE from false teaching, IF per chance they

have been exposed to false teaching.

Amen?

Amen!!!

prosperity preaching, is it biblical,

its biblical to love God

loving God does not require ignoring the realities of money and the resources, necessities, and power it can bestow

I think loving and following God leads to prosperity, but prosperity should not be more the aim than loving God

if that makes sense

Scriptures that show us that God does not mind us

prospering (but of course, this means much more than just

financially prospering ..and thus is why the Word has to be

studied and rightly divided) ):flowerforyou

........................

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

PSALM 1:1-3 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly; nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

PSALM 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.

PSALM 35:27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, "which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

PSALM 92:12-15 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing. To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

PSALM 115:12-16 The Lord hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great. The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children.

Different versions of the bible may be easier to understand but, no matter what version you use.. Prosperity scriptures still mean the same. Some have changed the wording just so it is easier for us to understand.

PSALM 122:6-7 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

PSALM 145:8-9 The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

DEUTERONOMY 28:1-2 “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. DEUTERONOMY 6:1-3 "Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey."

GALATIANS 6:6-10 Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-7 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

DEUTERONOMY 28:3-14 "Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. "Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. "Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. "Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. "The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways."The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you."The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. 11 And the LORD will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. The LORD will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

DEUTERONOMY 8:17-18 then you say in your heart,"My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth." "And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

DEUTERONOMY 11:13-15 "And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will give you the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. And I will send grass in your fields for your livestock, that you may eat and be filled."

19, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,
where moth and rust doth corrupt,

20, But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21, For where your treasure is,
there will your heart be also.

22, The light of the body is the eye:

23, But if thine eye be evil,
thy whole body shall be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness,

24, No man can serve two masters:
for either he will hate the one,

Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25, Therefore I say unto you,

Is not the life more than meat,

if God so clothe the grass of the field,
which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven,
shall he not much more clothe you,
O ye of little faith?

31, Therefore take no thought,

Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

God wanting us to prosper , does not mean we are to

have a greeedy desire for the world.

God won't even propser those with wrong motives like that anyway,CeriseRose.

God sees and knows our heart.....

This is what I meant about the Word of God being studied

properly and rightly divided...so it will not be

misunderstood to mean something it was never meant in God's

Word to mean in the first place.

Amen?

God wants His people to prosper, not just because it gives

God good pleasure to Bless His people; but also so that

God's people may also be a blessing to OTHERS!!!

Actually, in studying God's Word, we can see that is the ULTIMATE

PURPOSE of God wanting to PROSPER us.

And Not just financial prosperity ,btw...but prosperity in

EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES !!

AMEN?

God GAVE.

And We Who are in God, will also GIVE when God Blesses us.

Amen.

Exactly, there are many ways God makes us to prosper...
and many ways we, in turn, may bless others.

I am by no means anti-wealth!

I pray that we all prosper...in Christ Jesus!

"But my God shall supply all your need
according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"
Philippians 4:19

And these "riches" mentioned here are not monetary
in particular.

"Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints,
is this grace given,
that I should preach among the Gentiles
the unsearchable riches of Christ;"
Ephesians 3:8

These "riches" are a mystery
and are found in Christ Jesus for our stewardship!

><>
In whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of his grace;
Eph. 1:7,

That he would grant you,
according to the riches of his glory,
to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
Eph. 3:16,

But my God shall supply all your need
according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

Ephesians 3:
Paul's Stewardship

1, For this cause I Paul,
the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

2, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

3, How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

4, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5, Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men,
as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

6, That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body,
and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

7, Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God
given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

8, Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given,
that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

9, And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery,
which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

10, To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places
might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

11, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

12, In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

13, Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

14, For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

16, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory,
to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

17, That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

18, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length,
and depth, and height;

19, And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge,
that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

20, Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us,

21, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages,
world without end. Amen.
