First lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday unveiled tougher nutrition standards that school meals will have to meet starting this year. The new standards were required by the 2010 school nutrition bill that increased funding for school meals. The new regulations, according to the Department of Agriculture, will: • Ensure that students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week; • Substantially increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods; • Offer only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties; • Limit calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; and • Increase the focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium. The first lady announced the new rules alongside Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and celebrity chef Rachael Ray at an elementary school in Alexandria, Va. ___________________________________________________________________ IMO, she would do better to lead by example. Like, dumping that double-wide she's towing behind her. Black market, unapproved junk food will bring a hefty price on the Grade School playground. |

Bring back the old food pyramid and champion that! Something has to be done because too many kids are diabetic by age 10 and if parents don't make that change somebody has to. |

Bring back the old food pyramid and champion that! Something has to be done because too many kids are diabetic by age 10 and if parents don't make that change somebody has to. Like you said. You can do all you want at school. The rest of the time their permissive parents allow them to snack out in front of the video games, computer or TV. Is Michelle gonna' come into the home and dicktate what the kids consume? Hell, libs were all up in my case when I suggested junk food, sodas and such be ineligible for purchase with food stamps. |

Michelle looks to me like she has the body shape of a healthy middle-aged woman.
When someone advocates something, the merit of their claims rests on the claims themselves, not the shape of the person making the claims. |

You absolutely right, especially about food stamps! |

I agree, we have to start giving our kids a solid FOUNDATION again and they spend far more waking hours in school than at home,,, school is for learning, not socializing, although the latter is an added perk so we need to encourage the environment BEST SUITED for children to learn and nutritious meals are part of that environment at home, there is not nearly the exclusive purpose of 'learning' so availaibility of treats is not quite the same issue in the home environment,,,because of the balance of OTHER elements in a home,,,unlike in school |

"Let them eat Cake" Marie Antionette is credited with saying this, but it not certain she actually did.. Although, the peasants that chopped off her head said she did..And that was one of the reasons they did.. |

Y'all want kids to start eating healthy and being healthy?
Get their parents to start a more active roll in bring them up, Maybe teach the parent to Just Say No, when the kid DEMANDS the junk food instead of something substantial, Or here's a novel idea, start limiting the Happy Meals, Quarter Pounders, Fries and sodas to either or or maybe just one instead of a whole bag full 3 times a day. Maybe make the parents accountable for their kids, and let the same parents discipline the kids, Maybe create enough jobs so at least one of the parents can actually work and the other be home to stop the latch key syndrome Take away the kids dam video games, Take away the kids text machines, Limit the kids PC time to school work first and foremost. Give the kids actual homework. Boot their azzez out side to play, oh wait...can't do dat, cause they be gritting shot up by da gang bangers doin drive bys. Y'all want healthy kids, then pull up your pants and lead by example. |

LOL....I have no kids.........so that's not my problem. No matter the incentives you use though, i.e. tax incentive, there will be a way to cheat the system.
