When someone presents statements, arguments or logic that is somehow flawed or contradictory, that is fair game. Everyone who has read my posts knows that I will attack what you have said, even if it's just your opinion, if it suffers from logical flaws. I admit that I can sometimes get nasty with the things that I have said, but I always direct them at the POST, not the PERSON. There is no room on this site for the users to attack each other. If someone posts their beliefs / opinions, their post is fair game to attacks, but we should never lower ourselves to attacking the person.

Nice try, but NOBODY believes you were calling my _post_ about Ann Coulter a 'jackass'. The Internet has a long memory, unfortunately for you, and for the hair trigger on that Ad Hominem Gun you use to shoot from the hip.

And a huge AMEN to that, spider! It is my opinion that it takes more smarts to defend your view than to throw mud at the view of another. Although, I admit, I am aware that there are those who are inept at expressing themselves with the written word. Too, there is the chance words can be misinterpreted as the inflection, tone, and volume cannot be known by the reader at times. Just my opinion. Great topic!

It's not a crusade, Crusades are of your religion, not mine. It's the right and fair thing to do, if you can't see that there is nothing I can say to make you see it.

For those following along at home who do not know exactly what an Ad Hominem is and in the interest of eliminating my own ignorance:

Description of Ad Hominem

Translated from Latin to English, "Ad Hominem" means "against the man" or "against the person."

An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting). This type of "argument" has the following form:

1. Person A makes claim X.
2. Person B makes an attack on person A.
3. Therefore A's claim is false.

The reason why an Ad Hominem (of any kind) is a fallacy is that the character, circumstances, or actions of a person do not (in most cases) have a bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim being made (or the quality of the argument being made).
Example of Ad Hominem

1. Bill: "I believe that abortion is morally wrong."
Dave: "Of course you would say that, you're a priest."
Bill: "What about the arguments I gave to support my position?"
Dave: "Those don't count. Like I said, you're a priest, so you have to say that abortion is wrong. Further, you are just a lackey to the Pope, so I can't believe what you say."

Calling someone a "jackass" is stating that they are acting in a foolish or stupid manner. You were acting like a jackass, so when you admit that Ann Coulter was making a joke, I will apologize. But when you can't be intellectually honest enough to admit she was joking, you acting like a jackass. Be a man and admit your statement was stupid, if you want an apology.

Spider, I fully support the view you present in the opening post. If TLW wants to consider me 'part of your crusade', so be it. Attempting to defend your name calling of Kerry by claiming it was a statement about his behavior seems disingenuous. You are a human being, you were irritated, you called him a name, it was wrong, you should acknowledge it was wrong and even apologize and try not to do it again. In my not-so-humble opinion.

Kerry, Just because Spider made a mistake, doesn't in my mind invalidate his effort to raise the quality of discourse by posting a thread like this. I think he is 100% sincere in that post. Now, the next time he indulges in gratuitous insults, you can say "But weren't you the one advocating avoidance of ad hominem attacks?" I see this as a community issue, more then a personal issue.

Expose the stupidity of their claims, but try not to call them names or actually call them stupid. Besides, smart people make stupid statements sometimes. Maybe often.

I'm guessing nobody remembers what it was that KerryO said. He posted a JOKE that was made by Ann Coulter which was attacking the Communists and claimed that was what she really believed. He was claiming that Ann Coulter hates women and doesn't think they should be allowed to vote...ignoring the fact that she's a woman completely. He was being a fool, but I said jackass because it's more time period appropriate.

This is another thing I've noticed...anytime I post something that can't be refuted by my detractors, they turn the thread into a discussion about what a lousy person I am. If you don't have any good arguements refuting what I said, then why post?
