Palestine/Gaza The main cause of hatred in the ME

It’s a tragedy that the Israelis – a people who must understand better than almost anybody the horrors of oppression – are now acting as oppressors. As the great Jewish writer Primo Levi once remarked "Everybody has their Jews, and for the Israelis it’s the Palestinians". By creating a middle Eastern version of the Warsaw ghetto they are recapitulating their own history as though they’ve forgotten it. And by trying to paint an equivalence between the Palestinians – with their homemade rockets and stone-throwing teenagers – and themselves – with one of the most sophisticated military machines in the world – they sacrifice all credibility.

Gaza is an open air Prison...No real freedom of movement

=====================================================
Operation Cast Lead a Planned Humanitarian Disaster

The aerial bombings and the ongoing ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli ground forces must be analysed in a historical context. Operation "Cast Lead" is a carefully planned undertaking, which is part of a broader military-intelligence agenda first formulated by the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2001:

"Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago, even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas."(Barak Ravid, Operation "Cast Lead": Israeli Air Force strike followed months of planning, Haaretz, December 27, 2008)

It was Israel which broke the truce on the day of the US presidential elections, November 4:

"Israel used this distraction to break the ceasefire between itself and Hamas by bombing the Gaza strip. Israel claimed this violation of the ceasefire was to prevent Hamas from digging tunnels into Israeli territory.

The very next day, Israel launched a terrorizing siege of Gaza, cutting off food, fuel, medical supplies and other necessities in an attempt to “subdue” the Palestinians while at the same time engaging in armed incursions.

In response, Hamas and others in Gaza again resorted to firing crude, homemade, and mainly inaccurate rockets into Israel. During the past seven years, these rockets have been responsible for the deaths of 17 Israelis. Over the same time span, Israeli Blitzkrieg assaults have killed thousands of Palestinians, drawing worldwide protest but falling on deaf ears at the UN." (Shamus Cooke, The Massacre in Palestine and the Threat of a Wider War, Global Research, December 2008)

that Figure is a Lie,even according to Palestinian sources!
But if it suits your propaganda,go right ahead,be my guest!

Palestinian civilians: Hamas made us stay in homes used by gunmen

It is unconscionable that the world would dare to condemn Israel for the killing of civilians in Gaza despite the steady stream of stories like this that establish that Hamas did everything it could to provoke civilian casualties. More on this story. "Italian paper: Gazans say Hamas kept them in homes used by gunmen," from Haaretz, January 22 (thanks to Michael):

Palestinian civilians have accused Hamas of forcing them to stay in homes from which gunmen shot at Israeli soldiers during the recent hostilities in Gaza, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported Thursday.

More than 1,250 Palestinians were reportedly killed during Israel's offensive against Hamas in the coastal territory. Israel has been harshly criticized for the large number of civilians among the Palestinian dead, of whom they numbered more than half according Gaza officials.

But the Italian paper also quoted a doctor at Gaza City's Shifa Hospital as disputing the number of Palestinians said to have been killed in the campaign.

"It's possible that the death toll in Gaza was 500 or 600 at the most, mainly youths aged 17 to 23 who were enlisted by Hamas - who sent them to their deaths," he said.

13 Israelis were also killed during the 3-week operation, which was aimed at halting rocket fire on southern Israel and destroying Hamas' infrastructure.

The Gaza doctor was further quoted as saying: "Perhaps it is like Jenin in 2002. At the beginning they spoke about 1,500 dead, and at the end it turned out to be only 54 - of whom 45 were militants."

He was referring to the Israel Defense Forces battle with Palestinian militants in the West Bank town that took place during Operation Defensive Shield at the height of the second intifada.

Top IDF officer: Hamas made 'monstrous' use of children during Gaza op

The IDF Gaza Division Commander on Thursday, meanwhile, branded Hamas' use of women and children during the offensive in Gaza as "monstrous" and "inhumane."

Brig. Gen. Eyal Eisenberg said the civilians were sent by Hamas to transfer weapons to gunmen during the offensive. He also accused the Islamist militant group of booby-trapping many of the civilians' homes.

"Entire families in Gaza lived on top of a barrel of explosives for months without knowing," Eisenberg said.

The officer asserted that despite international calls for investigations into alleged war crimes, the Israel Defense Forces soldiers adhered to moral principles while fighting in Gaza.

IDF releases Cast Lead casualty numbers

Military figures say at least 709 of 1,166 people killed were terrorists; 162 names yet to be attributed.
Talkbacks ()

The IDF formally released precise figures on Thursday for the first time detailing Palestinian casualties incurred during Operation Cast Lead, and said a large majority of those killed were terrorists. Of the 1,166 names of Palestinian dead gathered by the IDF's Research Department, 709 have been identified as "Hamas terror operatives," the IDF said, adding that the terrorists hailed from a variety of organizations. According to the IDF, 162 additional names of men killed during the operation "have not been yet attributed to any organization." A total of 295 Palestinian non-combatants died during the operation - 89 of them under the age of 16, and 49 of them women, the army added. The figures were released "following the publication of reports that introduced false information originating from various Palestinian sources," the IDF said. "In order to remove any doubt regarding the number of Palestinians killed in Operation Cast Lead, the IDF wishes to introduce the accurate figures to the public. "The figures were gathered following the examination of various intelligence sources and after the names and numbers were thoroughly cross-referenced and examined," it added. In its statement, the IDF stressed that Operation Cast Lead targeted Hamas "and not the citizens of the Gaza Strip." "It must be stressed that the fighting took place in a complex battlefield, defined by the Hamas terror organization itself. The Hamas terror organization placed the primary fighting scene at the heart of civilian neighborhoods as it booby-trapped homes, fired from schools, and used civilians as human shields," the statement continued. The IDF said it took "extensive measures" to avoid striking noncombatants. The steps included issuing warnings via leaflets, broadcast warnings in Palestinian media outlets, and phone calls to homes in the conflict zone. "The procedure of making use of warning shots and the briefing of commanders to take extra precautions in populated areas were also among the measures taken by the IDF," the army said.

BBC THROWS JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY OUT OF THE WINDOW

Yet again, journalistic professionalism is thrown out of the window in the BBC’s desperate attempts to attack and sully Israel. A story claiming that IDF soldiers have fired on Gaza civilians attempting to leave their homes – in some cases carrying white flags - is based on totally unverifiable and unsubstantiated claims.

The article states that “BBC journalists in Gaza and Israel have compiled detailed accounts of the claims.” Who are these BBC journalists in Gaza? On the basis that foreign press have not been allowed access to Gaza, one can only assume that these supposedly neutral observers are, in fact, Palestinians. This seems to be confirmed by a footnote in the story: “Research and reporting by Hamada Abu Qammar in Gaza and Heather Sharp, Fouad Abu Ghosh and Raya el-Din in Jerusalem.”

So the BBC is relying on a Palestinian ‘journalist’ and Palestinian ‘eyewitnesses’ in Gaza along with others who are nowhere near the conflict zone. This form of agenda-driven reporting sees the BBC sinking to new moral lows.

You can send your comments to the BBC Complaints website – http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints (for detailed instructions on how to navigate the BBC Complaints website, click here). Demand a proper explanation and be prepared to take this further if the BBC’s initial answer is inadequate.

UK Commander’s Expert Testimony Stirs UN Controversy by Contradicting Goldstone Report
Published by
UN Watch
- at October 16, 2009 in Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

GENEVA, October 16, 2009 - The former commander of British forces in Afghanistan upset the Arab sponsors of today’s U.N. special session when his expert testimony contradicted the thesis of the Goldstone Report. “Mr. President, based on my knowledge and experience, I can say this: During Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli Defence Forces did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare,” said. Col. Richard Kemp.

UN Watch Oral Statement
UN Human Rights Council, 12th Special Session
Geneva, 16 October 2009

Delivered by Col. Richard Kemp

Thank you, Mr. President.

I am the former commander of the British forces in Afghanistan. I served with NATO and the United Nations; commanded troops in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Macedonia; and participated in the Gulf War. I spent considerable time in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, and worked on international terrorism for the UK Government’s Joint Intelligence Committee.

Mr. President, based on my knowledge and experience, I can say this: During Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli Defence Forces did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare.

Israel did so while facing an enemy that deliberately positioned its military capability behind the human shield of the civilian population.

Hamas, like Hizballah, are expert at driving the media agenda. Both will always have people ready to give interviews condemning Israeli forces for war crimes. They are adept at staging and distorting incidents.

The IDF faces a challenge that we British do not have to face to the same extent. It is the automatic, Pavlovian presumption by many in the international media, and international human rights groups, that the IDF are in the wrong, that they are abusing human rights.

The truth is that the IDF took extraordinary measures to give Gaza civilians notice of targeted areas, dropping over 2 million leaflets, and making over 100,000 phone calls. Many missions that could have taken out Hamas military capability were aborted to prevent civilian casualties. During the conflict, the IDF allowed huge amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza. To deliver aid virtually into your enemy’s hands is, to the military tactician, normally quite unthinkable. But the IDF took on those risks.

Despite all of this, of course innocent civilians were killed. War is chaos and full of mistakes. There have been mistakes by the British, American and other forces in Afghanistan and in Iraq, many of which can be put down to human error. But mistakes are not war crimes.

More than anything, the civilian casualties were a consequence of Hamas’ way of fighting. Hamas deliberately tried to sacrifice their own civilians.

Mr. President, Israel had no choice apart from defending its people, to stop Hamas from attacking them with rockets.

And I say this again: the IDF did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare.

Thank you, Mr. President.

well,he thought he'd scored a Victory!

The tactics of Hamas

Background of the combat
Hamas operated from within the Gaza Strip, one of the most densely populated geographical areas in the world. Well over 90 percent of the Gaza Strip's population is now Muslim. The IDF could only achieve its assigned objectives if it conducted a campaign on the ground inside the Gaza Strip. Hamas recognized this and prepared for a likely air attack followed by a ground assault.

Hamas' strategy relied upon foreign media reports from within the Gaza Strip as its most effective weapon. Media broadcasts of horrific destruction and death, especially of small children, appeared on bloggers' websites, opened evening news broadcasts, and ran on the front pages of newspapers and magazines around the world, accompanied by heartrending photos.

In contrast, Israel refused to allow the foreign press into the Gaza Strip. Thus, Hamas-friendly media outlets and correspondents provided virtually exclusive coverage of the events. Hamas outperformed Israel in media warfare just as various terrorist factions have done to coalition forces involved in the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns.

Hamas' tactics
Hamas in Gaza deliberately attacked civilian population centers before and during Operation Cast Lead, making an Israeli military air and ground operation inevitable. Hamas employed mortar bombs, Kassam and Grad rockets, homicide/suicide bombers, and active shooters against Israeli civilians. Hamas boasted of its intention to hit Israeli civilian population centers. The terrorist group's specific goal was to inflict the maximum amount of civilian death, suffering, destruction, and devastation that it could. Hamas understood that the terror group that was most successful at killing Israelis, and that launched the grandest attacks, would become the dominant militant group in Gaza. It would be able to solicit the largest financial contributions and attract the best recruits. Hamas' public relations personnel were quick to publicize and exploit mortar and missile strikes in Southern Israel.[6] Hamas systematically and deliberately used civilian sites as cover for its military operations. Using their own civilian areas for military advantage was central to the terrorists' overall strategy.[7] Hamas based its operations in civilian areas because of the likelihood that doing so would result in substantial harm to civilians. Hamas' apparent intent was to make it impossible for the IDF to avoid harming civilians and damaging civilian structures.

Hamas launched rockets from areas near schools, used hospitals as bases of operation, stored weapons in mosques, and booby trapped entire neighborhoods. Thus, Hamas was able to keep the IDF from attacking legitimate military targets by taking advantage of the IDF's aversion to causing Palestinian casualties. When the IDF did attack, civilian casualties and the damage caused to homes, public institutions, and the Gaza Strip's infrastructure made excellent propaganda. The media reported almost all casualties as civilian, including combatants engaged in firing missiles. Casualty counts became a propaganda tool artfully wielded by Hamas supporters.

Hamas operatives regularly fired rockets into Israel from within or near residential and public buildings, including schools, mosques, and hospitals. There are dozens of examples of this tactic.[8] Even the yard of the central building of a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) educational complex in the town of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip was used to launch a rocket attack. On January 18, 2009, an IDF UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) identified a rocket launcher placed immediately between two school buildings. The Israeli Air Force did not fire on it because it was too close to the schools, thus rewarding Hamas for the placement of the rocket launcher.[9]

Hamas staged its command and control bases and located its weapons and munitions manufacturing and storage facilities within Gaza's most densely populated residential areas and next to all manner of protected sites.[10] Hamas used civilians' homes and buildings housing public institutions for its operational bases. It conducted much of its fighting during Operation Cast Lead from within these private residences and public facilities. Hamas used the IDF's reluctance to attack these locations to its advantage. Hamas' main headquarters during Operation Cast Lead was located inside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The IDF did not attack the hospital because of the inevitable harm the attack would cause civilians and the worldwide outcry that would result. Similarly, Hamas made a regular practice of storing weapons in mosques, as exemplified by the IDF's discovery of weapons in a mosque in Jabaliya....................................

http://www.tomgrossmedia.com/mideastdispatches/archives/001004.html

so actually it is Hamas who committed Warcrimes in Gaza, regardless of the Shellgame their Friends are playing!

No, Israel and the USA have a special relationship, as does the UK and the USA.

Face facts - every country spies on each other, it's always been done, and always will be done.

Yes, you have a gripe with your country in the midst of a recession, and me too, but we have to think what is right and just, and aid to Israel to purchase weapons for self-defence from the USA is unfortunately the order of the day.

If the arabs drop the hate from their agenda all would be hunkydory, but they haven't so Israel needs weaponry which it purchases in the main from the USA.

Oh by the way, did you know that the Israeli military trains with the US Marines from time to time inside Israel giving them their expertise and learning from the US Marines? No? Well, you learn something new every day.

Do we get anything for the money we borrow and then give to Israel?

It is beyond ABSURD

Oh and do they also sell our secrets to the soviets as in the polard case?

Your argument is absurd, Tut tut we all spy on each other no big deal move along.

No fricking way.

Bring it up and your called an anti semite.

Israel has NUCLEAR WEAPONS for gods sake no one is going to seriously mess with them.

Its INSANE to give that country money while we rob from grandmas social security.

How can any sane person defend this arrangment.

So you think that because in your opinion Israel has nuclear weapons no-one would mess with them? Get real! Iran couldn't give a toss about its citizens and it's country, and has shown that before, and whether Israel has nuclear weapons or not (and Israel has not admitted or denied it has nuclear), Iran would still strike Israel at the earliest opportunity when it is ready. Israel cannot rest easy whilst Iran is the threat it is.

You want Sharia law spreading far and wide? Israel is the barrier to that coming to fruition.
