Well....I have been in therapy before...but the scary thing is everyone I knew in college who was a psychology major was majorly screwed up..............so yes, I have benefited from in situations but as my friend Jonathan calls it "mental masturbation" playing with ones own thoughts for just the pleasure of playing with ones own thoughts without cause is a little dangerous.
I agree...in a way. I'm guilty of that too. I think it's nice to have an un-biased opinion on how the mind works though. No matter what yr thoughts are, no matter how disturbing or bothersome....it's always good to have an un-objective opinion.......

what please if I may ask, is an un-objective opinion?

And I agree if it's enjoyable and u feel u benefit, that is what mattersflowerforyou
an "Un-objective" opinion would be the paid professional who's job it is to listen to the subject in which they have no personal interest in outside of hearing them out and offering their professional advice.

....to psychotherapy?

No. I have a therapist that I see once a week. I benefit a lot from it. He helps me think outside the box and to understand myself better. Its good being able to talk to someone who is never judgemental.
I did it for couple years in my twenties and I came back now that I felt I needed it.

If someone is under stress and needs a confidential source to sort through their thoughts and decisions I see little harm in it. UNLESS the therapist uses what they learn to influnce their own values on the patient or benifits from the patient someway beyond the agreed upon fees.

Yes. I believe most people are sincere in their effort to 'help' others,,,including therapists.

It becomes kind of scary though, when therapists have so much CONTROL over their clients as to be able to convince them of things through mere 'suggestion'.

Since I have a 40 year old nephew that is a "psychotherapist" I can say from my experiences with him they are one f* upped people.

I guess it works for some people, but not for us mule heads. I found it best to sit in a counseling group with other nam vets and just talk about life in general. Sort of a trust bond there.

I think it would depend on the person .

My daughter had the school whatever they are called, ( im not even trying to spell that word) talk to here ans he called me in as he wanted to talk to me..

And his advice was that i needed to act more mature, that I couldnt be both my childrens friend and Mother what

He told my daughter that she was angry with me and needed to let it go..
we still laugh about it as no matter how much we tried to talk to him, he was so set in his idea that he couldnt see past anything.

So if someone can listen with an open mind and actually help ..Great, but if they are judgemental and see things that arnt there then they are a danger.

I cant respect the opinion of any random 'professional' with out first knowing a bit on their back ground. For me any individual must earn an certain element of respect before i take their advice on board with any real conviction. If they havent experienced a similar situation then to me their words lack validity. Hey, no-ones perfect, so why would you take a shrinks advice just coz theres a shiney plaque on their desk?
