I had a scholastic book that I don't know that name of but loved, part of it went:
ROLLING OVER, ROLLING UNDER, AS THE CAPTAIN ROARED LIKE THUNDER. STAND AT ATTENTION LIKE A SOLDER. COUNTING ONE, TWO, THREE. It was about animals on a ship and of course, the captain was a lion. I was also big on Richard Scary books. |

Black Beauty, and yes The Black Stallion. I read Old Yeller but was too heartbroken by it to consider it a favorite.
I had large gray book with dozens of short stories that I've never seen anywhere else. Some were realistic and some were fantasy. I have no idea what the name was, but I loved that book. Honestly, the World Book Encyclopedia was endlessly fascinating to me. So, I'm a nerd. |

The Madeline series was a favorite of mine. I also loved Bunnicula which I was lucky enough to do with some of my younger students a few years back. Really reminded me how funny the series is and to see my kids get so excited about it.

Someone mentioned Adrian Mole which I also loved. Have you read any of the series of his as an adult?
Judy Blume - classic Little Women - still makes me cry I'l have to check my parent's garage as I have kept many of them and this thread is making me nostalgic. |

Encyclopedias.
When I was a kid, the school system I went to was a joke, but I always loved learning. So, I would enthusiatically read encyclopedia articles about things I wanted to learn. When I first discovered I could do this, it was like discovering something magical. |

My uncle was a salesman for World Book, and I guess he was pretty good. So I expect he gave my parents a set when my brother and I were born. Part of the reason I liked it was that it had see-through pages on the human body. One page showed the muscles, one page had the bones, one page had the circulatory system, etc. You flipped each one on top of the next to see how they fit together. It was pretty cutting edge for the time.
The other thing was that it had lots and lots of illustrations of cat and dog and horse breeds. Pictures of animals always do it for me. |

Also enjoyed many of the other books listed of course but thought I'd add a couple more to the list. Harold and the Purple Crayon The Little Engine that Could The first series I ever read completely was the Matt Christopher books at least I read all of the books in the series that they had at the library. 8^) Here is a link to some other childhood favorites in a Happy Mother's Day book discussion... http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/blog/happy-mothers-day-book-style/ |
