So Cold

I watched
her casket
slowly lowered
into an empty darkness
as the burning cold rain pelted my flesh
with a sorrow that took my breath away

It wasn’t supposed to be this way;
I was supposed to breathe forever
in the embrace of her love
and now I’m shivering
in the cold
afraid
abandoned
and alone
no, it wasn’t supposed to be this way

Did you hear me Lord?
Did you hear my prayers? Did you hear them?
Did you hear them? Please tell me why?
Why did this happen? Why her?
Did you hear my prayers?
I know there is no reason for death;
only a time
but it wasn’t supposed to be my lifetime
my forever

I lowered my head
while rocking slowly in my seat,
ready to run
and hide
ready to escape
the aches of my soul
as I watched the rain pelt her casket
while leaving a trail of solemn tears
to fall into the empty darkness
the rain is so cold
so very cold

I know who you were thinking of when you wrote this. I'm sure her little soul smiles down on you for holding onto her memory. Some people accomplish what their reason for living for is before they are even born. Some of us live til 100 and may never accomplish it before our body wears out. She knows why she was here and why she left as soon as she did. So is she cold? No she's not. She's living the happily ever after that only the innocent can-the eternity that the rest of us can only hope and pray we can earn over a long lifetime.
