after a certain point in life when we become alright on our own,,we can loose our motivation to wait for someone to transition,,,,

as maya said, if someone shows you who they are believe them

and at this point its a pretty reasonable concept for me to follow ,,,as opposed to hoping they will transition into someone else

you don't have to hope for them to change. to me, by denying them you deny the possibility for them to change. as if they are incapable.

i guess if you're planning on sitting around reading the bible together, dating a non-christian might not work for you.

. . .

it depends upon what you mean by 'deny'

being friends generally entails keeping seperate lives, LTR leading to marriage generally entails joining a life

different standards for different situations

if it is just a situation of 'hanging out' (platonic) , than its merely a friendship and anything goes

if its a situation of 'dating' (hoping to become non platonic), than its something more serious where there does have to be a compatibility of values,,,,

values and beliefs can be mutually exclusive. one doesn't need to be a christian to be moral or to treat people with respect. one doesn't need to believe in any deity to do those same things.

some people may feel the need to be with someone of the same faith. i personally think that it's because they think it will be easier on the relationship if they have that commonality. i believe that if two people respect each other as people, they have no reason for religion to be a source of friction between them. can't people agree to disagree? does it have to be "you believe what i believe" or "i believe what you believe"? can't two people believe different things and still be compatible?
could a democrat and a republican coexist as man and wife? or does one have to have the exact same beliefs as the other? yes, politics and religion are two different things, but they are both things that people (in general) are very passionate about and on which tend not to sway. they are also (in general terms) belief systems. not belief in any deity, but instead a belief in certain principles or ways to govern.

I guess if your relationship gets serious and children are involved, then you really do need to think about religion. If you have a person that totally believes in God and then the other one don't, then it could really confuse the children. You would have to question how would the children be raised?
I myself dated someone that was not a believer and it never came up...honestly I had no clue until I said something about him going to church with me and the boys. I was shocked...I guess because he knew we went to church and he didn't say anything, I think he should have. Our relationship didn't end because of our beliefs, it ended because of the miles between us.

Everyone talk, everyone listen.

Having a conversation about religion, or lack of religion, is most likely to do one of two things:

It will either open your eyes to things that you might not have seen for yourself which will lead you to the one and only truth (because there can't be a God and at the same time for there to not be a God. Only one of those statements is true).

And/Or:

It will strengthen your beliefs (pro God or no God) in what you already think/know about there being a God or not.

Win/Win situation.

I try to hear all sides of the story and then listen to what my heart says is true. Keep asking questions with an open mind and searching for YOUR truth.

Just don't push your opinions/beliefs onto others and you might gain more friends that way.

*btw, it's your decision to believe/not believe any of what I just said*

 rofl biggrin

exactly, for one to strongly believe there is NO GOD

and another to not only strongly believe there is A GOD, but to strongly lead their life by doctrines of this purported GOD

is different than two having different POLITICAL beliefs, etcc

and the thing about longterm childrearing together, which should always be considered a possibility that will arise if a relationship is sexual(unless its homosexual) , will this person raise a family with similar values, will this person be a PARTNER in raising the children and setting the examples that are important for them,,,etc,,,

Peter, are we talking core Christian principles or core principles such as "do unto others..." which are older than Christianity. There are plenty of core principles in all faiths which have been usurped and linked to Christianity, even though they are far older.

No we are not. I really don't want to turn this thread into a discussion of religion. Wrong place...

Started a thread over in the General Religions forum.

why must a preference involve looking down on anyone

IF I prefer tall men, and there are an abundance to choose from,, why does that mean I am looking down on short men?

its just a matter of preference, christians have them like anyone else

fitness buffs probably arent interested in the overweight very often
harvard grads are probably not interested often in high school dropouts

people can lean in the directions of those they feel will 'relate' to them best and who share their values,,,nothing wrong in it,,,

Agreed. I've lost all desire to criticize someone for any preferences, though I'm sure others will criticize me for the same. Should anyone have to settle for everything they don't want? I won't, so if that makes me "shallow" or "callous", then say what you will.

i don't know it just seems christians look down more on atheist than the other way around, atheist are just stepping up more cause of the way christians think of us,anyways save a christian ride an atheistdrinker

Some christians look down on anyone who is not christian.

It would appear some Christian people aren't the only ones who look down on people. Do I hear "self-righteous"?

I'm not looking down on anyone because of their religion or lack of religion.

i guess closed mindedness is whats wrong with this world.well to each his own i guess

enteresting that you say this. i always love an exchange of views with an atheist and by atheist i'm referring to the "strong atheist" who believes that god does not exist as opposed to the "weak atheist" who does not believe that god does not exist but sees no evidence to make him think that god does exists. as an agnostic who thinks the human mind is incapable of nowing gods, the afterlife or other supernatural phenomena, i see both the strong atheist and the faithful as equally closed minded who can never prove himself right and the other wrong.

Christian women don't seem that much of a problem...the ones I've encountered has been Angels...but then again isn't Satan also an Angel

also Christian Women are commanded to love you ...so rest assure when you go out on that first date with them you have nothing to worry about since you already know that they love you

also you get to play a lot of cool games with them...you can play The Exorcist....or ...how many commandments can we break ..or..is it fornication or is it making love

I don't think anyone should judge people by religion, or whatever else. To be fair. We're all here. So just accept it for what it is.

You don't believe that at all.

Would you date a man who beats his children with a whip? No? Well, you just judged said man as unworthy of your affection.
