Gnome 3.

First, good news for those who impatiently await the brand-new Fedora 15. The new version of Red Hat-sponsored free operating system has been declared "gold" and it will be officially released tomorrow (Tuesday): "At the Fedora 15 final go/no-go meeting today, the Fedora 15 final release was declared GOLD and ready for release on May 24, 2011." The new release will bring a large amount of excellent features, including GNOME 3 desktop, LibreOffice, power management improvements, consistent network device naming, and, last but not least, a dynamic firewall: "Most Linux systems use iptables type firewalls and the problem is that if you want to make a change to the firewall, it's hard to modify on the fly without reloading the entire firewall. Fedora 15 is really the first mainstream operating system to have a dynamic firewall where you can add or change rules and keep the firewall up and responding while you're making changes. The dynamic firewall technology will still need development work, but it is available in Fedora 15 for users to start playing with to see how it works with their environments. The dynamic firewall isn't just for inbound traffic either. It can also dynamically adjust to the needs of outbound traffic originating behind the firewall.".

When lightning ran in on my computer I found out the difference in Gnome 2.32 and Gnome 3. It got my NIC card so after putting my computer in the shop for a deal with the computer guy I am using an older Dell dimension 3000. The computer guy told me the Laptop he sold me froze up and he couldn't fix it. I told him I would rather upgrade my existing system so he let me upgrade to dual core processor (a new motherboard if I paid 30 bucks for new HP box). I went to the newer 775 CPU. Once I diagnosed the NIC card problem and resolved the MAC address problem - That of I am only allowed three MAC addresses by my ISP - I used a NIC with a MAC address they would allow. It was then I found out that the Gnome three asks for a better graphics card. So the trade off with Gnome 3 is that it uses more graphics power.

How is the usability of Gnome 3? I'm not really much of a fan of Fedora, but I'm willing to make an exception if the experience is worth it. Right now I use Linux Mint 11 as my secondary OS and I'm quite content with it on count of its speed. I've seen the videos on their site that explain some of the features of Gnome 3 which I find pretty impressive. If anything, I think that it would be pretty cool to be able to use Gnome 3 on my existing Mint install.

It is pretty cool with Fedora 15. Fedora 15 is a fast install. It does Nvidia good with the GeForce 9500GT. I tried to install the Mint 11 but must have got a bad burn. According to Clem if you satisfied with Mint 10 you don't necessary have to upgrade. I am very satisfied with Julia although I am curious about Katya. Fedora 15 looks better with Gnome 3. According to what was written about Fedora 15 and on the MintCast they realise that Gnome 3 is new and already working on a later version of Gnome 3.

Julia(Linux Mint 10) caused me some problems with Katya(Linux Mint 11). I didn't realize this until I tried to load Fedora 15, Zorin OS 5 RC, Katya(Mint 11) or Legacy OS 2 on my SATA drive. My EXT 4 and Swap were locked. I found out my burn of Katya was good as was my Legacy OS 2. I had 4 loads of Fedora that were there but weren't booting up. Found out that was a grub war going on with grub update from grub2. Katya won the grub war. Wow. Do I ever run into some anomalies and kernel panics. But everything is okay now.laugh
