Topic: Boycott Moderation

I think that self-moderation is a bad idea.

Although I appreciate Mike and Van have busy lives, this "self moderation" is so open to abuse.

Classic example is that a totally innocuous thread has been targetted for deletion.

I will be leaving the site as well, until this idea is stopped.

There will be times when an argument gets out of hand, but by then (if it is in its 10th or 11th page) if people have accepted it, then how do you go back and self moderate?

Freedom of speech is a fundmental right.

You have it in your constitution, we have a place in London where you can speak on anything (almost) you want.

Free speech has a price, but having your peers make you pay it is wrong.

Stay on and boycott. Piss and vinegar is in short supply.
Too much pablum not enough P & V.

The self moderation is to remove threads that don't belong where they are or shouldn't exist at all. It's a good idea, IMO. I don't understand why you don't like it. You didn't give any details about the tread that was going to be deleted, so I have no way of knowing if I agree with you or not. I think it's sweetly ironic that I was able to vote to delete a thread that was created to complain about user moderation.

I see. If one disagrees. Attempt to censor. Sweet.
What is wrong with this picture?

Oh yeah, freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
Rock on. Bring it. Just don't "moderate" - but hey
I'm skeptical.

As a person who has owned and has been to many chatrooms throughout the years, moderation never worked and in the end only causes hard feelings and eventually the room goes down.

I can see the use of moderation when there is obvious abuse but as you can see, people are using it for underhanded reasons.

Give people an inch, and they take a mile.

Some very good people have left because of this "moderation".

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Another button for the power starved to push to soothe their fragile egos.

Personal vendettas and abuse of a simplistic system wide open for the small minded to abuse.

Heaven forbid someone share their thoughts and opinions and be contrary to the opinions of the 'little kings and queens' of the internet world...they may find their is no tolerance in moderation.

The reason why it sucks is because a group of self-appointed "moderators" or Lord of the Flies emulators can decide to cr.a.p on any topic or individual or well reasoned opinion if they merely have a quorum of disagreement. This could easily result in limiting discourse to the point of reducing the forums to completely unobjectionable drivel.

And it cuts all ways. Neither "conservative" nor "liberal" viewpoints are protected. So you are right to think this could neuter the site. But the best way to combat it is for the users of the site to express their outrage and insist on having their voices heard. Or leave. Some don't have time to waste making obvious arguments. But me, I have a little time to spend on it
tonight.
