Fitness and health is beyond genetics. Anybody can be in shape, they just choose to do the work, make the effort, do what they have to to overcome what genetics doesn't hand them, or they don't. I'm not saying I want Halle Berry, I'm saying that I want a woman that is of the norm. Somebody who doesn't spend her whole day sitting on the couch eating nachos and watching Soaps. Teeth, you can take care of them as much as you want, but sometimes you just don't have control over it. One of my ex's had a daughter that's teeth are all going to fall out before she reaches adulthood, because her body doesn't produce enamel. She has no choice in the matter. No control. She will end up with implants because her mother's medical will cover the replacements.

I wouldnt date someone with 'bad teeth', unless I had already met them prior to seeing their teeth and there was an effort being made for them to correct their teeth

there are some people who CANT help being overweight, if we get technical, because it starts in their youth when their PARENTS supplied their food and set the example,,,holding them accountable for something they had no power to control is no less shallow than holding someones teeth against them because 'they had no control of it'

I gather , in most cases, people CAN choose to take care of their bodies and their teeth and both preferences are equally understandable to me

When your soulmate is a matter of preference then you ought to have set standards.Yes it is admitted that other people were born out of crappy genetics but other people's téeth are bad as a result of póor personal hygene,I bet noone would want that for we all like kissing

not always. I have friends that have lost teeth due to auto accidents, hockey accidents, etc. And one who just fears the dentist so much its actually a phobia. And a few of these people just can;t afford what it costs to get them fixed.

i already have dated soemone with bad teeth, it was form his up bringing, But he was very clean and brushed his teeth religiously to keep form them from getting any worse, so my answer would be depends on the persona and situation

As a point of reference, I won't date a woman that is out of shape. That is something they can control, and it is a sign of character. If you cannot care about your own health and fitness it is irrational to think that they can care about me.

We all have preferences, but I don't base mine on things that are out of the realm of personal choice.

I think that can still fall along the lines of superficial. I think what people forget about someone who is overweight is that...

They may or may NOT eat any more than the average person does, but their genetics have them gaining weight more easily. Sometimes, too, it could be because of a condition they have or medication they take. Or maybe , if it's a woman, she's had a baby and she's working on losing the baby fat. For some of us, it might take longer than others, due to their metabolism. Just as you might see a really thin person, that doesn't mean they are in good health or take care of themselves. They might have a disease or even an eating disorder, or maybe, they're genetically predisposed to be thin. Lucky them that it's socially acceptable to be thin. That doesn't mean they exercise and take care of their bodies. They might even eat way more than the overweight person sitting at the next table at a restaurant who's trying to survive on a small salad does.

As to the original question, I think it depends on how one defines "bad teeth". Do you just mean crooked teeth? Yes, easily fixable and yes, sometimes people don't have dental insurance and can't afford what many would consider to be cosmetic surgery. But if it's because they smoke or eat too many sugary foods, or never brush or floss, then, I would say no, because it goes beyond bad teeth into unhealthy habits, some of which might prove fatal.

And yes, while an overweight person might be overweight because he or she eats cream pies or something, if they die of a heart attack, well, it would be sad, and of course, ultimately, it would be their own fault, but it isn't as if they would be shoving a cream pie in your face. But if it's a person with bad teeth, because they're say, a smoker, smoking can make other people around them ill. Or maybe they just don't brush and floss and they've got gingivitis, well, that can be passed on to their mate through kissing.

So, BOTH of your arguments can be considered superficial, and not all overweight people are fat, lazy idiots that sit on their ***** all day eating bon bons.

The only thing I'm shallow about a man is his personality and the way he lives his life. I hate bums, sorry. Or ones that never take a shower or shave. And ones that get violent or stumble everywhere when they drink. IF THIS IS YOU,,,PLEASE MOVE ON!!

But I pretty much prefer ones with teeth, but they don't have to be perfect teeth. Just brush it everyday and takes pretty good care of it.

It may be a point of preference, but teeth? REALLY? Some people can't afford to get their teeth fixed. Some people are born with abnormal teeth. Is that their fault and should it be used against them as a person? I'm lucky, I happen to be in the military and get dental work done for free. But then again, realignment and whitening and what have you, unless done for the physical structure of the teeth is considered cosmetic and not covered in the military. I don't know about you, but if I had misaligned teeth or had a disease that caused me to lose them, I'm not going to go out and spend thousands of dollars on getting my grill up to a woman's superficial standards. Hell there is even a disease out there that causes your teeth to rot out of your head from the day your born. I find it rather pathetic that somebody would hold something that is pretty much out of a person's control against them.

People wonder what the hell is wrong with this world, one of the things is people are to damn caught up on looks. What the hell you gonna do when you get old and wrinkly, kill yourself because you're not perfect anymore. Anybody focused that much on looks should save the gene pool and not pursue a relationship.

Well said...
