Topic: An Etiquette Question

I've made several chat connections, and it is common to be asked if I would like to get into an intant message exchange. I always respond that I am too dumb to know how to do that. This is because I don't want to get into an exchange situation that I can't easily get out of, at least for a while. It may be somebody that I can quite enjoy having an exchange with, but not somebody that I would want to get trapped into an endless conversation with. What do you thinl?

I think you are doing the right thing,,, I have had NOTHING but bad experience sharing my messenger information

if they ask to im on another site or yahoo or whatever, i consider it a scam. on mingle im is ok, and if you don't like the conversation you can disconnect and then post on "what are you thinking" thread about how the mingle site runs slow and kicked you off an im you were using

honesty is the best policy. sometimes it is just easier and more
comfortable to email back and forth. if you do it fast enough it is
just like chat but with longer sentences.

saying that you are too dumb to chat is not true and not very
flattering to anyone.

This may be part of a larger picture for me. I never answer my phone, either. I let my answering machine do it for me so that I can screen my calls. I have always resented telephones, because they give people a way to have their thumb on me at any time, on demand, and without my permission. I haven't had any complaints, but I'm wondering it people think that that is rude.

That's a dilemma. It has some wonderful potential, but doen't anybody value their privacy and anonymity
any more?

i decided not to take a job one time when they wanted me to wear a beeper. but i don't find phones very intrusive. one can always turn
them off for a bit if you are "in the library"

laugh

it is a little rude and selfish to disconnect totally
possibly even pathological if it persists indefinitely

I figure if the person takes the time to call me, the least I can do is answer the phone.

Sometimes it's just to know where I'm at. THAT'S ANNOYING!grumble

I so totally agree. I truly dislike phones, especially cell phones. They are so intrusive on so many levels and do everything to dilute the value of real time relationships and communications anymore. Nothing more annoying than visiting or talking with someone who proceeds to answer a phone call and talk. UGGGGHHHH

they were okay when they were rotary and landline for the occasion when someone wanted a little conversation and NOTHING else was going on, but now, its like people HAVE to talk about something with somebody EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY,,,,,its nuts

Well now.
One of your posts was about how to email-dump
the ugly girls in favor of newer ones who were
more attractive.

Now you want to know how to stop IM'ing with
someone when it suits you.

I say, keep posting, your problems will be over
sooner than you think.
