don't know that much really - that's why I posted - to get information

I heard on the news that the Dept of Justice is planning to require our ISPs to save data from our browsing habits and make it available to them

some feel a "Digital Bill of Rights" is in order to protect our freedom of speech & privacy, and to define how the information that is saved about us may be used, who may access it and such

sounds like a pretty big issue that has been brewing, really, for some time. But (and I don't know this to be true) - but with the incidents of online bullying that have occurred -and other "cyber crime" some resulting in violence or grand theft - puts a new spin, in my opinion, on a situation where normally I'd say NO WAY (to tracking & saving the online behavior of individuals) to seeing where it could be helpful in solving & deterring cyber bullying and other crimes. not sure how well I explained this.

but I have been cyber-bullied so I can see a couple different sides to this

the internet is a public arena,,,

I dont wish to see freedom of speech or expression abridged but I would be supportive of measures that held people more respsonsible for the results of their speech(similar to what inciting to riot might be in real time) when it ends in death or physical harm

I would also support measures to protect people from discrimination by employers or educators based in things not job related (like what their website looks like or what their opinions have been on the internet,,,etc,,)

I would like to see legal recourse against those employers who use such tactics to eliminate or discriminate against prospects,,,

The gal who started the "Draw a pic of mohamed" is fearing for her life.
Why won't the feds prosecute the ones who threatened her with death?

yes, I agree and think you have some good points there. There is a shared responsibility I believe. When we post, for example, we do so with the knowledge that it is a public arena

at the same time I agree that what we say & do during non work hours - as long as it is legal and ethical - should not affect our emplyment

idk anything about that, so sorry to hear of that. I am not certain of all the possible courses of action she has available, but if hasn't filed it with the FBI as a cyber crime, she needs to

I am not an expert on this subject and am not the best one to advise another who has been a victim, but these stories I hear of victimization make me think that public safety issues may outweigh entitlements to privacy in a public forum

the question then becomes where do we draw the line?

I think we should postpone the inevitable as long as possible when it comes to digital privacy if such a thing still really exists. I say this because popular opinion can be swayed. Once swayed going back does not seem to be an option because the old adage of the ends justifies the means. I don't mean to come off as a conspiracy theorist but only postulate the obvious and that is that Big Brother is always watching.
