‘The Dark Tower’: Ron Howard’s plans (and passion) for Stephen King epic

Article here: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/12/17/the-dark-tower-ron-howards-plans-and-passion-for-stephen-king-epic/

They want to make it into a trilogy....7 books?! BUT, NBC plans on making it into a series, and they plan on coinciding the series' premiere with the film's premier. It sounds like they will tie in together, the series will fill in what the movies leave out.

I still wish Frank Darabont would have done the films, since he is the one that adapted The Green Mile, Shawshank, and The Mist....but it'll still be cool to see(hopefully)

I react to the news of a Dark Tower movie, like I would react to hearing someone talking about killing my dog. I don't have a dog, but if I had a dog and someone was talking about killing it, I would feel like they were talking about making a Dark Tower movie.

No matter the end result of the movies, the books will still be exactly the way they were.

It's less likely that they will do a remake of a Dark Tower movie, if the first one flops.

A Dark Tower movie is likely to flop.

I would love to see a well done Dark Tower movie series, but I am afraid that any attempt is likely to be terrible. It's absolutely imperative that whomever does the movie respects the source material.

If you've read "The Talisman", you must remember the time period spent in the boy's home. It's the single most memorable part of the book in my opinion. They plan to cut that part of the book from the movie and make the movie a PG-13 buddy teen movie between Jack and Wolf, with no deaths. Anyways, that's what I'm afraid they'll do with The Dark Tower.

I look forward to seeing all of it.. I was not real happy with how the last one ended so hopefully his doing another will makeup for the ending...

I have faith that they will do a good job.. Ron Howard is fully aware that people want what they've read in the books not someone else's take in a script...

Considering it's a planned trilogy, and they are filming it the same time as the series, it's very doubtful they would just film one movie.

Not sure what The Talisman has to do with this, Ron Howard is doing The Dark Tower, Spielberg is doing The Talisman and has owned the Rights to it since the 80's. It's not going to be PG-13 buddy movie but a TV mini-series and that's been the plan for several years now. And it's obvious Howard is going in a whole different direction than Spielberg is with The Talisman.

Thankfully The Talisman didn't get made in the 80's like Spielberg had originally intended, it would have been a 2 hour movie.

I wonder if that's why he did decide on an new book, it wasn't a popular ending amongst fans.

Kung Pow was supposed to be the first episode of a trilogy too. So was "Riddick".

Not sure what The Talisman has to do with this

It's another Steven King book for which Hollywood has shown no respect for the source material. I was using it as an example of what can be done to a masterful work by a egotistical director who doesn't respect the source material.

Ehren Kruger talks The Talisman
My mandate was to write a two-hour PG-13 movie, so most of my story choices were made with that in mind.

The Talisman still alive...
Yes, there is! It's back to being a movie. It's kind of on the backburner since we're waiting to see how everything shakes out with the DreamWorks, Paramount, Amblin thing.

And it's obvious Howard is going in a whole different direction than Spielberg is with The Talisman.

I don't know if I trust Howard to respect the source material. I know that the only book Steven King has ever written and cared about the movie's quality is The Dark Tower. But he sold the rights to the guy who made "Clover" and then that guy gave or sold the rights to Howard. So Steven King is basically out of the loop unless Howard lets him back in. If it was Guillermo Del Toro, I would be confident that the movie would be true to the source material, but it's not him. It's Ron Howard and I don't know how much respect he has for the source material or how much he'll allow his ego and own vision to get into the way.

Thankfully The Talisman didn't get made in the 80's like Spielberg had originally intended, it would have been a 2 hour movie.

The latest news is that it will be a 2 hour movie.

Well, The Dark Tower has a larger following than both Kung Pow and Riddick put together so I think it has a better shot.

I still wish though that it was Darabont doing it because he does love The Dark Tower books, and has done an amazing job with King's work in the past.

King is in the loop, Howard talks about it in his interview.

Hm, evidently King didn't care enough since he refused the rights to Frank Darabont.(Just going by my opinion that I think Darabont was the man for the job)

But I do agree Guillermo del Toro would also have been a good choice.

For The Talisman, too be honest we just won't know what it will be until it's actually being filmed, it's changed so much over the years, I wouldn't be surprised if news came out saying it was going to be an AMC series.

It's Official, Javier Bardem Offered Lead in 'The Dark Tower'!

About an hour ago the NY Post ran a story that Christian Bale has pulled ahead of Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen as Ron Howard and Stephen King's choice for The Dark Tower main character, gunslinger Roland Deschain. Apparently they forgot to "check their sources."

Deadline is now reporting that Bardem - who won an Oscar as the assassin in No Country For Old Men - has officially been offered the lead role by director Ron Howard and Universal Pictures.

Akiva Goldsman has scripted the first movie (due in theaters May 17, 2013), and will write the TV component as well.

There's no mention of the NY Post's rumor of the potential casting of "Dexter" star Jennifer Carpenter (also seen in Quarantine and The Exorcism of Emily Rose) or French/Moroccan Ghita Tazi for the role of Susannah, although I'd be hard pressed to believe anything in their old post.

I loved the book series up until "Wizard and the Glass" where it turned Roland in a wussy cry baby. And the books afterward was trash. When I read a certain author appearing in his own book I wanted to vomit. sick

Interesting!

I can only hope they don't butcher it too badly.

Another book might be interesting, too. I had a love/hate view on the ending.

Stephen King like Quentin Tarantino is somewhere in most of his movies.. I wasn't a huge fan of his being in the Dark Tower but it made sense for what they were doing and where he was going with the book..

I think King's writing changed after he stopped drinking and doing drugs and then again a bit after he almost died but I would never say his writing was trash.. He has a fabulous mind that is admired by those that appreciate his writing.

Dark tower incorporates almost all Stephen King's books. it ties them all to middle world, which makes his entire work, one big sweeping panorama of writing. He's truly the king of dark adventure for thinking like he has. I have much respect for the man, and love his adventures.

This panorama, is something most people do not know about....

You're right Vincent, I meant to mention that a lot of his books have a cross over/mentioning of other books...
